Does anyone tune it to this? I mainly use it for the live drive in the mornings and evenings. I think its a great service and very handy for avoiding the traffic and finding alternate routes.

Love the Weekly Featured Artist too.

They play great music during live drive too. Almost phantomesque...

Had to admit it took me ages to figure out what the baldy cow was though! :D  ;)

Dublin City FM was originally called Anna Livia and started off on 103.8 before being reallocated 103.2. Anna Livia was the first licensed community station in Dublin and, I think, in Ireland. I think it started on 1991 - could someone confirm that? Somewhere along the way, its license got re-designated as a Minority Interests license.

Dublin City FM and Raidio Na Life (which arrived a year or so later) are the only community-type stations serving the whole of Dublin - the others serve particular areas of Dublin.

Dublin City FM has a variety of programmes in its schedule, with a mixture of talk-based and music-based programmes. Later at night, there are always music-based programmes and quite often specific genres, Over the weekend, there tends to be a lot more music-based programmes.

It would be best to check out their programme schedule to see what suits.

Quite a few people have gone through this station on the way to further radio glory.

    Examples:
    Barry Dunne - 98FM
Mark Manning - Spirit Radio (after a number of temporary licensed stations)
    Robbie Fogarty - Sunshine 106.8
    Venetia Quick - Q102

Dublin City FM have a number of presenters who came to the station from Dublin pirate Jazz FM, some from 2003 around about the time it was raided. They include Sean Brophy, Chris Maher, who presents The Soul Kitchen, and John Public who presents reggae show Black Echoes. John presented more or less the same programme for over 20 years on various pirates up to and including Jazz FM!

According to Wikipaedia, it started in 1992. The original premises was in Grafton Street and I was there once. I remember it alright. What I was doing there is another story! The article reminded me that Dermot Whelan of Today FM is a former presenter as well.

Dublin City fm first broadcast as Anna Livia fm from a room in a Capel Street building belonging to Dublin City Corporation. It all started when it was awarded a 2 week licence during the celebrations of Dublin's first 1000 years. Run by a group of people headed by radio enthusiast Fergus Lynch it quickly became very popular for its mix of programmes which were varied. Many personalities from the world of entertainment, journalism and politics hosted their own half hour and one hour programmes. Nell McCafferty's programme comes to mind as one of the funniest of its kind with “sisters doing it for themselves.

The group then looked for a longer licence and was awarded one in 1992. It moved to Grafton Street in the heart of Dublin's main shopping belt where it stayed for several years. Several innovative programmes were broadcast from here including the Beatles Anniversary show from the roof of the building with a tribute band playing live. There was a very popular two-hour Saturday show which promoted Irish bands and groups and the station broadcast live coverage of the Dublin City Marathon and many other programmes which were ahead of their time.

I never knew that it started in Capel Street with a temporary licence.

I do, however, remember a very innovative program on Saturdays which featured largely Irish music in various genres - is that the program you are referring to. I did a search and cannot find the name of it. I wish I could remember the name of this program. Was one of the presenters female? Was she the one who covered the dance scene? What I do remember is that Brian Daly and Ronan O'Kelly were two of the presenters and they tended to cover the alternative rock scene. They were approached by FM104 to co-present an alt rock-oriented program called Planet X. Apparently, there was someone else involved as well with Planet X, according to a search that I did.

Brian Daly, aka Brian D, then went to Phantom as a pirate. He got very involved with Phantom right through its different licenses and was part of the management team when it got its full license. Brian left Phantom in 2011. In recent years, he has turned up as an occasional presenter on 8Radio.com. As far as Ronan O'Kelly is concerned, he has turned up on Radio 1 - arts programmes, I think.

On another note, there are a few presenters on Dublin City FM that were once a week presenters on 4FM for its first year: Chris Maher, with a soul show (what else??!). Sean Brophy (Smooth Jazz if I remember right) and Karl Tsigdinos (Shakin' Street - same as now!). Incidentally, between 1997 and 2003, Karl used to present the River of Soul on Radio Ireland / Today FM. Recently, he has started to present this show on RTE Gold.

I was reminded of another ex-Anna Livia person. I'm not sure if he presented on Anna Livia . His name: John McMahon. He went on to be a producer on RTE Radio 1 (Marian Finucane), before replacing John Clarke as Head of 2FM. John was the immediate predecessor to current Head of 2FM Dan Healy. I assume he is with RTE in some management role.

Correct re Smooth Jazz ( Sean Brophy ) & Soul Train ( Chris Maher ). Karl Tsigdinos show focused on Rock'n'Roll / may have been called Rock'N'Roll Friday.
He was on Anna Livia prior to River of Soul on Radio Ireland / Today FM

    ..............

I did something I should have done before. I looked up Brian Daly on linkedin and found reference to the program in question - City Limits.

Incidentally, Simon Maher, founder of Phantom and founder/owner of 8Radio.com, used to be a presenter on a media arts program on Anna Livia /Dublin City FM. He was involved with the pirate scene at the time, either Spectrum or Phantom or both (Pete Reid). Since he left Phantom (the legal version) in 2011, he has been a contributor to an arts program on Radio 1 - the same one as Ronan O' Kelly I think.

Come to think of it, a certain Mr. Peter Vamos, aka Sinister Pete, used to be a presenter on Anna Livia. He did some stuff for RTE on television (children's programs) and radio (plays). But it was his involvement first with Spectrum and then Phantom that I remember. Pete was with Phantom through all its phases until he. too, left in 2011. He was Phantom's first official PD as well as the first breakfast presenter when it got its full license.

I used to present the Rock / Metal shows on Friday night (Metal After Midnight) and then Thursday night (Thursday Night Trauma) back around 2010. The station was in East Wall back then and still is I think.

It was such a valuable resource to gain experience and cut your teeth so to speak. I'm on the other side of the window nowadays working for another station and very happy.

I'd highly recommend getting in touch with them if you want to break into the industry. They've always been very good with taking people on and showing them the basics.

I recall a fire at Anna Livia and the station relocating to temporary studios at Griffith College in Dublin - gaining RDS but losing an optimod iirc

The station was on 103,2 and 103.8 while it was changing to the new 103.2 home - iirc the extra transmission frequency was hosted by then recently closed Pulse 103 ??

Did Anna Livia lose a TX in the earlier days - around the same time Coast lost a rig ?

There was a succession of pirates on 103.2 before Anna Livia moved there - Coast FM, NSR, Kiss FM and Pulse FM. 103.8 is now occupied by Spin103.

I think that happened when they had their TX at Knockmaroon Hill. I think it was 1993. Coast's went walkies as well but was not before before they were in Ernies?

They do good no frills sports shows as well.
I did not realise how good they were until I heard it by chance after Livedrive.
A programme called GAA sportsdesk on Wednesday evenings, does local and county angles.
Plenty of other sports shows as well.
I am sorry I did not find the sports shows before as they a good alternative for those who have tired of Off The Ball on Newstalk.

I knew about the match commentary for gaa club games, but I did not realise that they do so many sports shows.
