Octavia RS comparison

I'm looking to change cars from an A4 that I have on PCP to get back to the good old HP route (Nothing against PCP, I just stress too much about the thoughts of a lump sum at the end of a term)

The only car I have seen that I like, which I would classify as in my budget would be the Octavia RS. It has a similar spec to my A4 and a more powerful engine.

Would there be any cars that I am overlooking? I have no preferences for badges, I do like a bit of a sporty look, diesel engine but apart from that I am thinking about things like the quality of the sat nav and bluetooth connectivity. I do some long journeys for work so comfort and not getting lost is important to me!

I'm assuming you have a late B8 A4 if it's on PCP. You're going to notice a drop off in refinement and perceived build quality from the off. I found the RS comfy on long spins but road noise is very dependent on tyre selection and there are quieter cruisers. The A4 is better in that regard.

Never had an issue with the infotainment tbh, the odd reboot over the time I had it was he height of it. There is a canton sound system available if you want something better than stock.

If you want something similarly comfortable it's worth looking at the superb sportline too. It's a bit boaty but other than that it feels just like a bigger RS with better build and refinement.

One of the things I like most about mine is the comfort I have with cruising on longer journeys. I have sat in a Superb Sportline and thought it looked incredible but I would think it is a good bit above the budget of approx 35k?

I think a "proper" RS would be quicker than a 330e?

Edit: maybe not based on parkers

I traded in my 2009 bmw 520d for an 2014 octavia rs and had to sell it again at a large loss 6 months later.

Thought the seat and driving position was terrible, not comfy and got sciatica from it which i had for months after.

Got an audi a6 and problem solved.

Just something to keep in mind going from a badge to skoda

Now this worries me. I would have had issues in the past with my past few cars until my most recent A4 (my first A4 even gave me sciatica issues) on journeys of 2+ hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23 theskibag

Yeah i got it straight away because i found the seat didn't support under the thigh and then the sciatica went up my back from there.

Plenty of people find them comfy though so i might have just been one of the unlucky ones.

I would just make sure you find the seat nice and comfy and supportive

Renault Megane GT 205 and the Seat Leon FR.

Volvo s60 or v60 D4 R Design. Similar power to the RS, far more refinement and comfort. Road nice insulation and overall refinement on Octavia's isn't. Leon FR a good option also.

Leon won’t be anymore refined over an Octavia though.

Hyundai i30N. Ok maybe it's a little out of budget maybe not maybe the OP does not went spend that much not knowing what the residual value of the car will be but it is a superb car in every way and an excellent car to drive and have fun with. It's up there with the Golf GTi, Focus RS and Renault Megane RS.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I don't think the OP is looking at petrol alternatives.

Don't want to go off topic. We've had both on our house and definitely found Leon Fr more refined. Particularly sound insulation

Had both too, Leon is definitely quieter.

The diesel rs is way slower

Even a proper turbo petrol RS would be slower( just guessing as never drove petrol, drove the 180bhp diesel many times )

I drove the 330e in Frank Hogan before Christmas as was playing with the idea of getting one from the UK

    Its really quick, instant power

It felt like it would run with the big 3.0l diesel BMW like 330/335d from my test drive and they are very quick imo

Pretty much, nothing against petrol, but I am a country boy so everywhere is a decent drive so would like a bit of economy.

Wait 18 months and buy a Tesla model 3

Nothing can beat its economy and it will blow the doors off a 2.0l diesel A4/Octavia, they will look ridiculously slow in comparison

OP doesn't want an EV though even if they are cool and trendy on boards.ie now.

PCP might be your saving grace too

Let the dealer take the hit

Diesel is being dropped fast by manufacturers and resale is only going to get worse, as governments are being forced to get rid of them

HP is a bad idea imo for a brand new diesel, fine do pcp as if it goes bad dealer takes the hit

Youll be left with a bad asset if you go HP

Especially ones over 35k, resale could can if electricification and hybrid really takes off and governments bring in more incentives.

PCP is not a bad thing at all

Trust me, I have been tempted. Skoda are doing 0% finance so my payments would be dropping drastically if I did take a PCP deal with them, its just a mental thing of always having the final payment weighing over my head.

That is the model s.. model 3 should come in around 40k I think, whenever it makes it here (2-3 years)

0% finance is very tempting, your not going beat that

PCP is cheaper in the long run, that's what it all comes down to.

Final payment could be financed at a good rate too if you wanted to keep

PCP gives you the option of keeping or leaving

    Thats a great thing

    My order says early 2019

They are ramping up production, I think we will see them on the roads here next year

    My bad, so it is.

350,000 order book and they 'hope' to reach a production level of 5,000 per month by March, so only 5.5 years to wait.

I'm guessing there would be a snag with the mileage to get the 0%, but even at the higher mileage I think it would be about 3.9%.

PCP is best viewed as a lease plan IMO.. with an option to buy out at the end if needed/wanted.
