Wrapping up the Vietnam war, his trip to China and the EPA being founded under his watch. Some of the positives. A lot more negatives...

In the fall of 1972 President Nixon announced that the rate of increase of inflation was decreasing. This was the first time a sitting president used the third derivative to advance his case for reelection.

He colluded with south Vietnam before his election to scupper peace talks and influence the voting.

Another great documentary from Ken Burns, both sides knew the war was absolute bollocks from the beginning but Nixon actions were lower again.

One of the best political quotes of all time is attributed to him; he told his handlers to spread a statement about an opponent around. When his handler pointed out that it was a lie he said:

"I know it's a lie, I just want to see the fcukers deny it."

I didn't see the documentary mentioned. Can you explain the above briefly, please/ Thanks

I'm sure that was, most likely, a facetious remark

Correct me on this Nixons rival was all about stopping the war. Nixon got word out to the south to stop peace arrangements so that his rivals mantra was in tatters.

If people remember him at all.. it is some combination of...

Only Nixon could go to China...

    Tricky Dicky...

    Watergate...

    End game in Vietnam...

    Queuing for gasoline...

Calamitous TV debate v JFK in 1960.
Coming back from political death to victory in 1968 and then landslide in 1972.

Without Watergate and term limits he would have beaten Carter in a landslide in 1976...

That was Lyndon B Johnson who wanted to spread rumours of an opponent having relations with farmyard animals.

Both are enjoyable. But I thought Frost/Nixon was a brilliant film.

If I'm not mistaken he taped his own phone conversations.
He had a very big set of jowls.
He wrote ten best sellers - political stuff.

He gave us the name 'Milhouse'.

Is this how it feels when the doves cry?

Milhouse was his Mother's maiden name whose family were Quakers who emigrated from Co Kildare.

Nixon visited Ireland in 1970 and went to their old church.

With regard to the Nixon V Kennedy debate. Apparently radio listeners almost all regarded Nixon as having won. The television viewers were swayed by seeing a very uncomfortable and sweating Nixon and regarded John F as having won.

Nope. He was on his second and final term when he resigned.

I’d imagine why the poster specified “without term limits”.

That's a tough question. I enjoyed them both. It's a bit of a taboo to praise Spacey these days, but i thought he portrayed Nixon very well.

Never mind term limits. Without Watergate it's unlikely that the Democrats would have nominated Carter in 1976 so, if Nixon could have run and had chosen to do so, he would probably have been facing a different opponent.

Well, he doesn't quite make the worst 10 US presidents, according to this survey of political scientists. There was a thread about it the other day...
