have had a loan of a little C3 diesel for a few days.
Sometimes it appears to be revving but no power when coming out of low gears. Once you get it up to 80 or so it behaves ok, only going to have it for a few days until my regular car is ready, what might be causing this , I thought at first it was the clutch ? or is this a common fault
    prob 260k on a 1.4 diesel engine

The symptoms are consistent with a slipping clutch.

If its a loaner while your own is being repaired, I'd be ringing them in the morning to let them know so that they don't turn around and blame you for wearing out a clutch on their car.

Hopefully OPs car is not in for a clutch replacement......
