We are going to New York next month, just wondering if anybody has been recently and how expensive it is to eat out/shop etc?
    Thanks

New York pretty much caters for all budgets. Stay away from the tourist traps around Times Square and it's no more expensive than Dublin. Diners are great for breakfast and won't break the bank or you could spend $100 on a steak easily in a high end restaurant. Plenty of choice for all pockets

Was there 2 years ago and found it expensive. The exchange rate at the time was only 1.05 usd / 1 euro so maybe that’s why we found it a bit dearer. We had been 4 or 5 times before when the rate was much better. We found clothes shopping had gotten dearer especially Macy’s in herald square which was always our favorite place. Even with the out of town discount card we still didn’t get much value for money. Did a bit of research when we where there and ended up going to jersey gardens mall and got much better value for money. You can get a direct bus from port authority bus terminal and it takes about an hour. Plenty of diners over around 2nd Avenue and always a good breakfast at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the replys, staying close to Times Square, have Broadway show booked along with the sightseeing pass, so what are people's thoughts on spending money for 6 days? That's breakfast, lunch, dinner - nothing extravagant, just decent - and some shopping probably Jersey Gardens. Would €1800 go far?

Get yourself a revolut card .see bargain alerts thread. You will get far better exchange rate than anywhere with it . It works like a debit card you top up but used like a credit card anywhere it's a mastercard so works anywhere.

    Excellent item for a traveller

How about a 7 day Metro card? It can be used for both buses and subway. Remember that a one stop journey on either is the same price as the furthest journey, if you get me. Check out their website. You can also get a 3 user cash loadable Metro card.

Further to the above, a 7 day card is $32. Each trip, no matter the distance, is $2.75, so if you reckon on more than 12 trips, you'll gain. Also depends how long you're going for.

Anyone any experiences of these during peak periods? Do the sub offices sell the same tickets as the Time Square desk? Any guide prices? Thanks in advance

$1800 for 6 days , that's $300 a day ,you will be fine, you could spend that in a few minutes if you wanted but food can be really cheap , grab a slice of pizza on your travels and be set for the day.The 7 day subway/ bus pass so there's no taxis. You could even do a day of free stuff like Times Square,Central Park ,St Pat's Cathedral. If your out drinking then I d stick to beer ,bottles of beer usually get a few free when you tip. It's a great City enjoy.
