    Hi all -
I currently drive a 1.4 2008 Civic. Looking to upgrade now and to keep next car for at least 5 years. Happy with Civic so far. About 80% of my driving is city driving. However I make 300km+ motorway journeys about twice a month. Looking for a 5 door hatchback that’s reliable, comfortable, and economical. Am I better off sticking with Civic or are there other options that I should consider? Thinking of getting a 1.8 for a bit more zip on the motorway. Thanks in advance.

Maybe look at the Auris hybrid. 1.8 is very rare in the newer Civics.

I have a 141 SEAT Leon FR 2.0tdi 150hp hatchback which I could sell. Have it 3 years and thinking of changing. Love the car and can't recommend enough. All the power you need while still achieves 50mpg; nice sport seats and wheels

Thanks, but would prefer to stick to Toyota or Honda if possible. Hadn't considered SEAT though, will read up on it. Linked Leon looks mint.

Same spec as mine only mines in blue. Far nicer spec and engine than the 1.2tsi

I'd avoid diesel if 80% of your driving is city driving, it will be of no benefit to you.

Just to give you some perspective; I drive a 2012 1.8 Petrol Civic since April last year, it's the EX GT model so it's got all the bells and whistles(Full Leather Heated - Sat Nav - Panaranic Sunroof etc), no heated steering wheel on mine sadly.

Mechanically it's been flawless, and it's got great space in it for storage, I literally fit a computer desk, a large computer which two screens, a guitar with a large case, pots, cutlery, multiple bags of cloths, a sock drawer and a bit more, it was a sight to behold, practically moved my whole life in one go.

The styling isn't to everyone's liking as they have an ugly arse, but I've grown to like it. You have a similar journey to myself, I live in Galway city and have that daily city traffic but I'm home in Monaghan twice a month which is 160km each way.

The city traffic is hard to judge fuel wise, it's 50km daily commute to work and back which is East City side to Spiddal and I spend roughly €25 euro a week but I can stretch it down more if I wasn't so throttle heavy.

Same for Monaghan commute, it's about €30 there and back. The car has an economy button but it's not really any use I find. Say you used 20 litres for a journey, with the eco button it would be like 17 at most and it makes the car feel like a bus. I do get a bit of strain of my leg from constant clutch use so maybe an automatic would be nicer, Galway city traffic is a nightmare and I live in the worst spot.

You can get a higher year version in the UK and VRT(approx.€2900) for under €15k.

That’s super IGR, thanks a mil for taking the time to write that. Very tempted by 1.8 alright. Can I ask how much you paid for yours?

I got mine privately for a steal as he was forced to sell, it came to just about 10k Euro in total.

The newer Civic is heavily based on the model you have, so if you like your own you’ll like the newer one. The 1.8 engine is carried over from the 06 shape too and they’re a very robust engine. I’ve 230k on mine and it’s on original everything -drivetrain wise.

With all the recent threads about hatchback Civics, what are the thoughts on the saloon version? We currently have a 2010 1.8 saloon with 53Kms and always wondered if we'd be better off selling privately rather than trading in.

Is there any desire for the saloon version. The load space of the saloon was a must when we bought it but things have changed and are looking to downsize.

The hatchback actually has a bigger boot than the saloon.
I’d nearly stick with what you have as its low mileage. There is less of a market for the saloon but it’ll still sell. The higher tax compared to the hatch would be a downside though.
