How about an air to air heat pump.

I know you're looking for something when you're not there but might be a good idea to add a stove instead of the open fire also, would be more efficient. Something like a Waterford Stanley Oisin or similar.

I think the A2A heat pump would be better than the storage heaters. It will also heat the air up quickly enough when you arrive in.

If you want something really cheap to make sure the place doesn't freeze you could put in something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0037VVY9U/ref=dp_cerb_3

Wood pellet stove would be ideal. Fully programmable 24/7

I don't think they come small enough for a single bedroom cottage, and don't they start at €12k

That's a big capital outlay for a small cottage. My choice would be an electric radiator that you can control from your phone or put on a timer and a stove for when you will be in all day.

Have a look at the ecovolt stuff.

an air-to-air heat pump starts at a much lower price than 12k. You are thinking of air-to-water.
