DIY wedding make up - mistake?

I recently had my hair and make up trial and was less than impressed. I hardly ever wear any myself and told her I wanted a natural look.

Friends said it looked fine but to me it looked troweled on. The foundation was collecting in the folds around my eyes and my eyes were stinging from being stabbed with brushes. She gave me a "Dewey" aka shiny face which I didn't like.

I know everyone says it has to be thick to last all day and you need it for photos but I'm loath to pay someone to give me a look Im not happy with.

I've considered giving her a list of things I'd like done differently but with a list that long I feel I'd be better just doing it myself.

I have no intention of paying for any more trials.
Would I be mad to do my own make up? I'm told I do a good job on the odd occasion I wear any.

Do your own if you feel that way, or alternatively you could go and get a few lessons in benefit, urban decay etc... you pay for the lesson but can redeem it against a product that way you have all the make up you need on the day

Almost all makeup on girls these days is layered on thick..

    Looks awful in my eyes.

Wear what makeup you feel comfortable with. Not what is someone else's idea of nice.

A good make up artist will listen to you. I’d try someone else. Whereabouts are you getting married? ( general area)

Trying someone else means paying for more trials. Once bitten twice shy.

Yes, but you'll be looking at the photos forever...

Look at Amy Schumer's wedding pics as an example...you may regret not having make up done.

The choice is stick with who I have and try to get her to do something I like or do it myself. I'm not trialing anyone else. I've already wasted too much on it.

I'm not sure what you mean about Amy's pictures?

Some could look better with make up.

Kate Middleton apparently did her own make up for her wedding.

Like you I had a disastrous first trial. I got the makeup to diy but in the end I risked using another mua after having a good chat with her. She did a really lovely natural look. I’m glad I didn’t diy in the end. You absolutely can’t get that mua if you’re not happy with the look.

There's more than one person in the wedding party.

I did my own make-up for my wedding - i got loads of compliments and I was more than happy with the photos. Like you I don't usually wear much and every time I've had my makeup done i felt like i was hiding under an inch of the stuff! I practised a few times for the look i wanted so that i wasn't panicky on the day and it worked out great for me anyway. I also did my own hair which i wouldn't recommend (my hair is very awkward!), but i liked the fact that i got to have a nice calm relaxing morning before the wedding without people flapping around me. That mightn't be a concern for you but it made a difference for me:) best of luck and enjoy, whatever you decide!

    Mod

It was a toss up between here and the wedding forum but I think this forum is more specific to make up.

Please read the charter for the F&A forum.

I wish I did my makeup for my wedding - it was my biggest regret of my day.

A makeup artist might be good, but of she doesn't know your face she don't know how to make you look yourself, and thats the issue here.

But the op is deciding about her own makeup. She has chosen to wear makeup, whether done by her or someone else. The people wearing no makeup in Amy's pictures have chosen not to wear makeup, so I'm not sure what your point is? That Amy's sister would look better with makeup on?

I'm not going to pay anyone doing my make up, since I have so much routine doing it myself, I know my products and I know exactly what I wanna look like. Especially since I want dark red lipstick, no way in hell I'm not gonna apply that myself.
I'm the one who has to be comfortable with the look at the end of the day.

OP, how about getting the products you like youself and browse through the internet and Youtube for tutorials and just practice yourself? Might pay off and be good fun.

Nothing wrong with doing your own. If you are, keep the photos in mind and use plenty eyeshadow and blusher. Lipstick is another decision. Do you just go nude/glossy or mad red. Practice beforehand with different looks. Take plenty selfies in different lights to get an idea of what works.

Above all, congratulations. Have a great day and a long, healthy and happy marriage.

And what's so horrible about it? As long as she feels like a million dollars who cares?

I don’t think it would be a mistake but I would practice as much as possible and invest in good products such as your base, foundation, powder etc. Some foundations look awful in flash photography so investigate what would photograph well and watch YouTube tutorials to practice also. Good luck !

Before I got married I went to BT's back in the day and got my make up done at the counter and my sister watched. I bought the eyeshadow and lipstick they used. My sister then did my makeup on the day. Going to a wedding a couple of years ago I went to the charlotte tilsbury counter, again before the wedding, and got make up done. It was cat! I'd never get mine done professionally now as I feel it's caked on and shows up the lines around my eyes. I prefer to use my own makeup and keep it simple. You don't want to look overdone if you're not a frequent make up user. I don't go for the theory that you need to wear more makeup in order for the photos to look good. I prefer that I look like me in my wedding pics and not an overly made up version of me.

Yeah I'm leaning more towards doing it myself. I don't enjoy having a stranger poke me in the eye for an hour and I don't want to pay someone to make me look like I've been given a coat of dulux weather shield. I know how i want to look and how I feel comfortable. I'd hate to look back at photos and not see myself in them. Im not sure I buy the idea that you need layers of products to look acceptable.

If you’re happy with your own makeup then do it yourself

Agree with the poster up thread who recommended applying your make-up then taking selfie type pictures in various different lights. A professional photographer will use a flash and if you have shiny skin, it will reflect back and won’t look that great.

I would usually do my own makeup at home. But I got it done for my wedding day and thought it was grand, just grand, I didn't give it much thought to be honest, it was just the done thing. Most make up artists go for a "natural" look for a wedding day, no mad colours, eye liners, lip colours etc. However a couple of years ago I treated myself to getting makeup done for a friend's wedding when I would normally do my own. I noticed such a difference. She applied it in such a way that my face looked flawless in photos and I literally hadn't to touch it all day bar a bit of lippie. I was even bold and managed a second day out of the eye makeup!!

Do your own! youtube is full of great tutorials, look up professional makeup artists like Lisa Eldridge, Mary Greenwell or Pixiwoo who have excellent videos on makeup tips, wedding makeup and best products to buy for your skin type. Generally makeup artists are taught a basic one size fits all makeup look which doesnt incorporate clients needs and doesnt take the whole face into consideration - the result is drag makeup or makeup that will look great on a 20 year old but aging and unattractive on a 30+ year old. You know your face best and are the best judge when it comes to your makeup.

Im all for people having their opinions but a sweeping statement like so is completely untrue and completely uncalled for.

How many make up courses have you completed?
I’ve done 2 make up courses plus a specialist bridal make up course but I haven’t done one that teaches drag make-up.
