just looking for boardsies views on these two - looking at changing - reliability is the most important thing - am trading in an 11 Focus Hatch (reckon I'll get about €6.5k for her), am willing to put €10k(ish) with it............

currently looking at a 15 Focus Saloon diesel 1.6 or a 16 Octavia 1.2 petrol

The father is a bit wobbly about diesels being banned from cities (I think Cork may be down the foodchain on that one though!)........am changing jobs soon so will be doing around 75km each day (maybe a little less).........have zero mechanical skills so need something I will never have to worry about (so no to BMWs!)

would like something pretty - I don't have to be dragging kids or dogs

Well what kind of driving your doing will decide whether you need a diesel.

Annual mileage, type of driving primarily (motorway, Town, etc) and type of work commute you have ?

If you don't need a diesel I wouldn't buy one petrols are generally simpler and cheaper to maintain.

why the 1.5 and not the 1.6?

It’s a newer engine, it’s apparently based on the old 1.6 but less prone to issues. We have some Fords at work with this engine on high mileage and hard enough drivers and they’ve all been good.

I know you have the 1.6 now.
