So currently have an 06 Astra which has been great to us (aside from going through coil packs a little quickly) and owes us nothing and are looking to refresh our car. Our parameters are:
    • €12k to €15k budget (have about €6k in cash so will be financing rest through a loan of somesort). Also will be trading or selling the Astra.
    • Do about 20k km a year, mostly around Dublin with a cross country trip once a month or so
    • Looking to keep the car for about 6 years.
    • We like our astra in most ways, but would like more bootspace, "extras" like bluetooth would be great
    • hoping to get approx 2014
    • Willing to go to UK/NI if there is value to be had
    • Main priority is value for money (both at purchase and running costs)

My first thoughts were the ever reliable Octavia, but I'm thinking avoiding the diesel editions because of our usual driving habits. But a little worried the MPG on the Octavia petrols might be worse? I'm going to go and drive a Rapid tomorrow as well, they seem to be fairly budget in styling but based on some research they might feel a little too budget.
The other thought I had was the Auris Hybrid tourer (estate), I like the idea of Hybrid especially if I go to the UK as the VRT seems very reasonable. Obviously the downside to this is that choice is slightly limited.

Any thoughts from the more educated members of the board?

Lexus IS200H might he worth a look as it's a hybrid but I'm lead to believe the boot may not be as big as you'd like.

Yeah have seen them around town, and the boot looks small. We usually have a bike rack/sports gear/buggies floating in our boot so space is good. :-)

The Ct200h has a tiny boot.

I’d have the Auris from the POV of long term reliability.
