disability allowance and rehabilitative work

A friend is on disability allowance many years and is anxious to do some work. But she does not know from week to week if she will be able so would have to be self employed. So how would that work out. Another thread said they would want to see payslips, so how does it work if someone does freelance work when they can. The doctor is happy to say it is rehabilitative and it would have a positive effect for her

I also saw that there are plans to make it so the work does not have to be rehabilitave. I only read that today. What will this entail, what changes are coming to it? Some said you have to go to see a welfare officer every so often but she is not near Longford where DA section is. How does that work

Yes there are changes coming regarding rehabilitave work on DA. By the end of this year ANY work will be considered rehabilitave with no financial penalties and the travel pass and medical card will not be affected.

Seems a bit too good to be true to me.

The other point I am thinking about is that once the claimant is in full time work for some time, might the department not be able to say the claimant no longer needs DA at all?

There's a means test and a maximum amount you can earn while retaining a minimum payment from DA and the extras.

Op, the welfare officer is the local one, there's a list here
    http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/otheroffice/community-welfare-office-contact.aspx

If she's going to be self employed, she'll just need to keep proof of earnings (invoices, lodgements into the bank). There's a certain amount she can earn annually without affecting her payment at all.

I understand that the rules are changing on allowable amounts during this year but do correct me if I am wrong...

At the moment, If you have no other means, the maximum amount you can earn is €427.50 and still keep an entitlement to the minimum personal payment of €3 (2017)

You could be right indeed, depending what they actually implement.

What should it say on the letter mine said I was taking up work for a few weeks to see if I could managing how my body would hold up but they sent it back saying it didn’t say if it was for rehabilitative purposes so what exactly should it say the doctor never done one before so he just wrote what he thought they wanted

It should say what they pointed out was missing, viz. that the work that you're planning to take up is for rehabilitative purposes. Whether it is or not is irrelevant if there's a box that needs to be ticked back in DSP HQ.

Always remember that it's their hall and their disco so it's advisable always to dance to their tune. Hence, if they write to you and tell you that you should have filled in the application form using a green biro then that's what you need to do!

No that’s what you can earn while on DA and keep your medical card.

You can earn €120 per week.
If you earn say €150 then €15 will be deducted from your DA. If you earn €200 then €40 will be deducted.

Yeah that's what I've been trying to make the distinction between

I don't understand it said it had gone up from

The changes remove the barriers to work by allowing people in receipt of Disability Allowance payments to earn €427 per week without losing their medical card.

The change represents a 250% increase on the previously allowed figure of €120 per week.

    What are you asking?

I have cystic fibrosis and and am on disability but I do 12 hours across a week which amounts to the 110-115 I was wondering did this change mean I could do a few more simple enough, if not no problem id never be able to work full time but a few more hours wouldn't be too bad

The poster wanted to know how much money he could earn from employment and still keep all his DA.
That article is regarding how much someone on DA can earn and keep their medical card.

Sorry Brian . Lone parents will be able to earn €150 from next March but nothing for DA. Better luck next time.
