I used RoS/ PAYE Anytime because I wanted to claim for tuition fees for 2016 and 2016. I also wanted to get a P21, particularly for 2017 as I moved jobs and found myself out of work from October.

Am I right in thinking that by using the Form 12 method to claim the fees for 2016 and 2017, it will automatically request a P21? Because after filling out the Form 12, there doesn't seem to be any means of requesting a P21 now...

Yes you are right to claim the fees using Form 12.

P21 is the name of the balancing statement that the revenue system will automatically generate after your information has been input to its system via the online (?) Forms 12 that you completed. You'll need to check your "My Account" inbox in a few days time to see if the P21s are waiting for you. And don't forget to check your bank account every few days to see whether the PAYE refunds have been lodged.

In MyAccount, you have the option to request a P21 or fill out a Form 12.

If you request a P21, revenue will calculate your tax owed/overpaid/balance using the information they already have about you, and you get a P21.

If you select a Form 12, you can add credits, additional income, and other details. Revenue then performs the calculation with this new info, and you get a P21.

The only difference is, you are using a Form 12 to amend the information revenue uses to assess your tax. So if you filled one out, you'll get a P21.
