Who Holds BER cert?

Friend bought a house in 2014, BER cert would have been provided (assumption as he cannot remember ever seeing one) as this became mandatory in 2009.
He is now putting the property on the market and has made no changes to the building, heating system etc.

Question: should his solicitor still have the BER cert or do they not hold onto things like that?

you can look it up on the SEAI register if you have the MPRN number
