    Sounds a bit like PCP?

Volvo announced this for the new XC40. Pricing for the car is out, but haven't seen any pricing for the subscription service. Actually sounds like a decent option - monthly charge covers the car, servicing, breakdown and insurance, just leaving fuel. Change after 2 years I think it was on the Volvo.

Wouldn't that leave a big old gap on your insurance record if you changed brands down the line?
Assuming the insurance is on a Volvo policy rather than a private one if they're offering it as part of the subscription?

I'd say once you get in to this type of deal, you won't be coming out of it and in to a more "traditional" arrangement, so it's likely that insurance will be bundled with all manufacturer versions of this scheme.

With a big enough uptake, you're looking at serious economies of scale - manufacturer only needs one insurance arm to cover the whole world.

Friend of mine asked in Volvo dealership about this scheme and was told Volvo were having trouble putting it together for Ireland due to our high insurance costs and not to hold your breath for it to happen here anytime soon...

More like a mobile phone contract:
    You want a 2018 Volvo XC40 / Iphone 8? Pay 10k Upfront and 400 Euros per month
You are happy with a used 2015 Nissan Micra / Iphone 6? 0 Euro and 200 Euros per month

    Its the way to go

    Depreciation makes car ownership pointless

Car is just a bill and job security doesnt exist

I like that model, especially short term 6 month rolling contracts

This doesn't exactly seem surprising does it?

I think until insurance here is reformed and prices become more sensible, then this idea won't work.
I wonder how much of the monthly premium will be insurance costs?
    Fecking insurance

I don't think they mean the premium costs, more so the payout costs !

Some manufacturers have the scale to form their own insurance companies, what effect financial rules in different jurisdictions would have I don't know.

It will be required to look at different models, as the urban generation does not define itself anymore by having a car as status symbol. A car is not a feeling of freedom anymore but something that brings you from A to B and back. So not having a car is not as unusual anymore, as it would have been 20 years ago.

If there would be such a subscription service in place in Ireland, I would consider it and crunch the numbers to see if it would suit me financially first.

And hopefully this will break up this insurance joke in Ireland.

You would imagine they would have done this here already if there was money to be made but given our claims system and the cost of insurance it probably not viable.

Sounds like a long term rental tbh!
