I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla 1.4 diesel. I've had it for a few months now and the temp gauge has always been down next to the C. Recently its started to move up towards the H after about 5 minutes of driving. It never goes past halfway. Should I be worried or is this normal?

The temperature gauge is there to indicate the engines temperature, It doesn't neccesarily mean there's a problem with the gauge because the temp is up,it should sit around half way once the car warms up, First thing to check is coolant levels?

EDIT:Misread the OP, Thought you meant It was creeping up towards H, and up until now didn't pass midway. Sounds like you're all good.

If it’s up at H you’re in trouble. Halfway - or a bit below is normal

    What you’re describing sounds normal

    Question....

How far do you usually drive.

Diesels take much longer then petrol to get to full operating temperature.

Were you doing mainly short runs??

It is normal for the temp gauge to go up to halfway and remain there.
If it continues into red then there is a problem.

it sounds to me as if your thermostat suddenly started working. Halfway would be about right

Unless they are doing short journeys and the car just never heated up. A small diesel like that could take 15-20 minutes town driving to get up to temp.

+1 on this. Those corollas are quite slow to heat up.

Also it's a digital gauge so it wasn't an issue of it getting stuck.
