Important to note, Breakfast Republic has an extra two hours so isn't directly comparable to Ian Dempsey. Nicky Byrne starts an hour later, so isn't directly comparable to D&D, etc.

True, I just put the 7am-7pm lineup side by side to let people view the figures

But adding up the 7am -7pm figures 2fm vs Today fm they have them beaten

by about 55,000 listeners during the day, so well done to Dan Healy

Was the Ray D'Arcy show on Today fm the highest rated show the station ever had?

I take it Gerry Ryan was the highest rated show 2fm ever had

Does anybody have Ray D'Arcy's & Gerry Ryan's best ever listenership figures head to head?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭gamecube

Also was Anton Savage fired by Today fm because he would not change the content of the show or because the show had lost listeners compared to Ray D'Arcy's figures for the same time slot?

Because if he was canned for poor listenership figures Dermot & Dave are a lot lower now than what Anton's figures were before he left

I'm actually working on doing a full set of figures for Today FM similar to the ones I posted in the D'Arcy thread over the weekend back as far as I can find reliable figures for. Aiming to go back as far as 2007 at least. I think Ray D'Arcy on 246,000 must be their highest, I can't imagine any other slot getting that high.

Whenever I listen to that show, it's mostly for Jenny Greene, as I've been a fan of hers for a good while. Always thought it a bit of a shame that she didn't get a chance to front the show solo, but I guess at the time they needed someone with more name recognition to try and clasp on to what remained of Gerry's listenership.

Has anyone the same details for red fm v corks 96fm. I level use to do a great job showing these figures but stopped to books ago.

Our work radio has been on 2fm since Today FM decided to go with dermot n dave and I think while Nicky can be a bit annoying (Nicky of the Byrnes etc ), he is a world m,ore tolerable than those morons on Today FM. Jenny is a good presenter as well and has a nice way about her. As a team I think they work very well together.

Tracey Clifford is fine too. Nothing amazing, but when the other option is Fergal (radio DJ by the numbers) Darcy, anyone sounds good in comparison. Plus she plays some pretty good music from time to time.

Anton left because he was dissatisfied with changes that were being made at the station.

Speaking of which, Anton's doing videos for Carzone now. Saw one pop up today. It's an interesting concept, but a bit rough around the edges and a bit cringe at points.

That's what he says. Let's not forget his "real" job is in spin.

He is also doing a slot on the Today show with Maura & Daithi

By the look of things he wants to get his foot in the door for some TV work

Cause he knows that ever being on the Radio again is a pretty long shot

Anton was doing TV while at Today FM, such as the TV3 breakfast show slots and the six o'clock show fill in and on Fridays and other short term things. Perhaps he is trying to get a presenting gig on RTE TV, I'm sure with his connections and experience he would have no problem getting in.

If his connections were that good, surely he'd have made it into there years ago.

I had forgotten about him doing the 6 o' clock show

I remember him saying he had to give it up cause he was too busy with his radio show

Ray Foley took over as Martin King's substitute on a Friday then

    July 2018 figures 7am-7pm weekdays.
    2fm vs Today fm
Breakfast Republic 186,000 Ian Dempsey 167,000

    Nicky & Jenny 148,000 Dermot & Dave 167,000

    Tracy Clifford 134,000 Muireann O' Connell 104,000

Eoghan McDermott 144,000 Matt Cooper 141,000

    612,000 listeners vs 581,000 listeners

(Even adding in the early breakfast show on Today fm 5am-7am (19,000 listeners) The figures are 612,000 vs 600,000)

I’m frankly amazed 2FM have as many listeners as that. I’d have guessed a fraction of those numbers.
As bad as Today FM are these days, 2FM has no discernible identity as far as I can tell.

Dan Healy has done a good job getting the listenership figures that he has. He cleared the decks in 2014 & it has worked out for him.

I was a huge Today fm fan but I never listen to the station during Monday-Friday now.

I might turn it on at the weekend for a bit, that's it.

10 years ago I never listened to anything else.

I dont listen to radio as much as a few years ago, but when i do it is usually todayfm - however i have a few times in the last couple of months flicked over to something else due to being annoyed with muireann/ferhal/matt and his army of sjw's. But 2fm doesnt even register for me as an option to flick to, ive listened to rnag instead (its actually quite soothing on a drive!) A guy from westlife, yer one from the apprentice, nepotism ryan, a former coworker who is an absolute pillock(Hi E!}) - i dont know how anyone can listen to them.

At the start I turned off Eoghan when he came on at 4pm but now I don't mind him. Since he started doing the voiceover for Love island Australia this year the Aussies love him so who knows........Maybe Eoghan might pack up & head down under for a new career in Australian television!

I cannot find Fergal D'Arcy's JNLR figures anywhere

I'm guessing that's not a good sign for him!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,539 ✭✭✭johnire

I think he dropped 2000 listeners. He’s absolutely dire and has got so much worse since Ed Smith left the show.

Fergal D'Arcy's show on Today fm has 102,000 listeners (-2000 since the last JNLR)

If he dips below 100,000 does that mean he will lose his time slot like Louise Duffy did?

    I sincerely hope so!

Why is it surprising ? As has been said dan Healy has at least steadied the good ship 2fm and has started to bring it back. It does help dan Healy that TodayFM is the radio equivalent of the hindenberg after the crash.

Why cant Today fm management see what they are doing to the station?

That's the question that I cant figure out!

who says today fm management don't see it ? There's a difference between seeing a problem and recognising it.

Today FM's daytime schedule has undergone so many changes in the last couple of years, they might not want to touch it again for a while. A drop of 2k isn't all that much anyway.

Over the past 6 years the changes at Today fm are like the changes Chelsea fc make to management every season! Endless!

Ray D'Arcy, Anton Savage, Ray Foley, KC, Al Porter, Louise Duffy....All leaving the daytime schedule

The changes have been endless but as you said before Ursus..... the freedom the likes of Ray D'Arcy and Tony Fenton had with the playlist is what made the station so great in the past

D'Arcy was teetering on the edge, his schtick was starting to fail. He was going to have to go eventually.

As goes freedom with the playlist - probably it was all still programmed, just more care for individual presenters tastes.

I know a lot of people on here would rather dig a trench for a day than listen to Ray D'Arcy but no way would his listenership have dipped to the same level that Dermot & Dave have in 2018 if he stayed at Today fm.

He would never have accepted a playlist he had no control over either.

For a long time before the end, my wife called him a "knickers" - even she was fed up by the domination of Jenny and Mairead in the show. I think a lot of people were going off him.

2fm is now my choice of music, I was a big big fan of D&D and after they made the move, it didnt suit them. I even tried to listen to them today but I've moved the dial to 2fm.

2fm vs Today FM October 2018 JNLR Weekdays

    Breakfast Republic 189,000.......Ian Dempsey 162,000

    Nicky Byrne 153,000.............Dermot & Dave 164,000

    Tracy Clifford 142,000.....Muireann O' Connell 102,000

    Eoghan McDermott 145,000.......Fergal D'Arcy 112,000

The Last Word With Matt Cooper 137,000

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭gamecube

    Ian Dempsey -5,000

    Dermot & Dave -3,000

    Muireann O Connell -2,000

    Fergal D'Arcy +10,000

    Matt Cooper -4,000

It's pretty much what we've been saying on the Today FM forum. The station's weekday output in 2018 is pretty poor & the drop in listeners across the lineup shows what we've been saying is true. (I know I cant believe Fergal D'Arcy increased his listenership either!)

This must be the worst weekday JNLR figures for Today FM for years?

They're dropping all the time. I found this blog post about Today FM's JNLRs from 2012. Some of the differences are startling

I'm posting the 2012 JNLRs because they're higher than the 2011 ones
    • Ian Dempsey 175,000. 2018 - 162,000
    • Ray D'Arcy 243,000. Dermot & Dave 164,000
    • KC 151,000 Muireann O'Connell 105,000
    • Don't have a figure for the afternoon slot but the lowest rated show on 2012's list was Hector's Breakfast show with 124,000 listeners. Feargal D'Arcy is now at 112,000
    • Matt Cooper 160,000. 2018 - 137,000

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭gamecube

Wow! That is a drop of 161,000 weekday listeners in 6 years!

    How the mighty have fallen!
