    Hi all,

We are looking to buy a family car (new arrival due next month)

    -Looking at SUV style
    -reliable
-budget ~30k (but if it comes in well under, better again)
    - 4x4
    -Can tow a trailer
    -diesel preferably
-smallish in size (I'd be moving up from a Corsa but husband would drive anything with no bothers )
-My Corsa is 2011 so would like to come up a couple of years.

I loved the VW T ROC but petrol engine was a deal breaker. We also looked at Range Rover Evoque, but recent thread on here has me iffy about it.

I would really appreciate any suggestions ye might have.

We have similar requirements and tow a horse box occasionally. Bought an Audi Q5 and very happy with it.

Really comes down to how much you wanna tow, anything will tow a trailer. Do you actually need 4wd?

Thanks a million for your reply. I wasn't very clear in OP, this will be our first child so we don't need a 7 seater-when I say family car, I mean the one we would put child seat in, drive for long trips etc.

For towing, similar to Fits, we would occasionally pull small horse box/cows. 4WD because husband will also use it on farm.

Thanks so much for all of the replies so far!

We have an old Audi as a runaround so we will keep that.

On the farm, I guess he will use it to tow/move animals, spin to the CO-OP to get stuff. I 'm not 100% sure what his farm work entails but it involves cows :pac:

Could you stretch to an old 4x4 for the farm and whatever car you fancy for the family?

Would second getting something farm specific and something else for the family. Our old car gave up the ghost 2 years ago and due to less driving I use one car for everything now, have to clean the car anytime I'm taking people anywhere, I don't mean a quick tidy. Smells are a hard to get out etc not amind hopping in and out of the seat in work gear in inclement weather. I appreciate it can be hard to find something of value for the farm as lowered priced 4×4 can have a lot of work done

So how does he manage now that you’ve got a Corsa?

Something with a towing capacity of 2000kg-2500kg would probably do ye so. That said two good sized cows or horses would most likely put ye very close if not over the legal limit.

As for recommendations the kuga and the tiguan seem to be the most popular around here. Sorento or sante fé too. You'll need the most powerful diesel option to get the best towing capacity.

That said I'd favour getting a cheap yoke for the farm and getting your own separate new car for the family.

I would go with a pick up like Hilux, L200, etc.

    Perfect for farm plus seats.

Yep, definitely something we could consider. Maybe reduce budget to ~20k & put 10 towards farm vehicle. Thanks for the suggestion. prob makes more sense.

That makes way more sense. You’re really looking for 2 completely different vehicles, so a combination of the two will just be an expensive compromise.

Tractor on the farm & Audi on the road. Not ideal so we said when we are investing in new car we could try get something usable for him too. Advice above to keep the vehicles separate is definitely going to be considered though

I have a Tiguan 4motion here for towing and farm work, use it in my real job too.

It’s nice to drive and tows great, wee bit disappointed with it reliability wise, nothing huge but a number of €300-500 repairs that were disappointing. The boot space is small, quite small.

If it were just farm work I don’t think I’d go Tiguan, I’d really be thinking something like a vw transporter, hugely practical for transporting “stuff” and they tow savage, comfortable to drive too.

He could also put the money and trade up the tractor for one with a 50k box, it would be perfect for farm work and not slow for towing on the road.

Why 2 if one can do more???

    Do you need 2 cars?

If yes then keep the Audi and buy a pick up.

Had many navaras but are prone to in the d22 2001 to 2005 model engine failure then the one that replaced it are mainly all cracking the chassis due to corrosion.

Many makes and models out there.
You can place a canopy on for boot space and remove if needed for carrying large items.
Towing no problems and good off road if needed.

I see jeep compass being advertised, probably over budget for the 4x4, starting at 28k for 2 wheel drive. Advert looked nice but I presume that brand is a hard sell second hand.

You'd pick up a nice D-Max for 10k, and have a decent budget for the car after.

We are looking to downsize one of our cars.

We’ve a 132 2.2 AWD Toyota RAV 4 luna; just haven’t got around to putting it on the market yet. Good pull out of it.

They are the vehicles suitable for you:

    Land Rover Discovery 2 , 3 ,4
    Range Rover L322
    Pajero
    Toyota LandCruiser/ Amazon
    Vw Touareg

For 30k you will get a nice one of any of the above.
Landcruisers, Discoveries and Pajeros can be got in 7 / 8 seaters.

Towing Limit on Land Rovers, Range Rovers and Pajero/ Amazon is 3.5 Tonne.

Also all the above will be good offroad, with the Land Rovers being the best.
The vehicles rated to 3.5tonne will be more solid towing the heavy loads.

    ‘Smallish in size’ though?

Room in the budget to lob a Tow Bar on to it. Large enough for a family, but not too big. AWD for off road use but decent on the road as well. Not sure on Towing capacity, but it's the old 2.4 5 Cylinder engine that produces a huge amount of torque even in single turbo D4 guise.

Your husband needs to figure out what he is towing, the smaller 4×4 tend to be 1500 to 2000kg max, if it's just calves and that they may do but cows or large animals he could get caught out, 3 cows and the trailer would have you over those limits. If it's larger animals he'll legally need a pickup or a large 4×4 such as landcruisers, discovery or pajeros
