Car values

I am looking for some help understanding how the 2nd hand car trade works.

Is there an official (or unofficial) car valuation system used in the trade to value 2nd hand cars?
Do dealers offer trade in prices below the "actual value" of the trade in car i.e. do they expect to make a profit on the trade in? and if so, what % margin would be typical?

Thanks in advance for any replies

I last week traded a 141 1.33 Yaris Luna with 26k km against a 161 Yaris Luna. It has 4500k km plus alloys front fogs and cruise.

I gave €4500 with the 141. The price of the 161 was €16k if you were trading in or €15k if buying straight.

I see they have my old 141 for straight deal at €13k.

From my experience if you trade in your car the garage will always offer you less than the actual value of the car because they want to make profit from it. If you sell it privately you can get more money but it could take longer to sell the car.

The main factors affecting a used vehicle price are mileage and condition, with options, location and color also playing a role. There are features that only affect a vehicle's price in their absence, such as air conditioning, and power windows and door locks. My only advice before buying a used car get a pre-purchase inspection. In NZ (I currently live there) I had VINZ PPI. Just find the local service and the mechanic will set the true price on the vehicle.

Plus there may be a difference in selling your car and getting a new one time wise unless cash flow allows you to buy first.

Practically it's a little more work plus the stress if people trying to strongarm you in price, strangers coming to your house. Personally not worth it for me but if you have the time, skill and confidence can be beneficial.

Completely agree if I was selling a car I wouldn't fancy having someone come over to where I live. Prefer to give it to a dealership for less purely for that reason alone.

Alot handier sell a car private if it's worth 5k or less, people are less likely to hand the hard earned cash to a private sale if car is worth more. They'd rather have the safety net of a guarantee off a garage and pay a bit more.

Another option which i just thought of.

My dad sold his last car through his mechanic.
The guy held onto the car for two weeks then sold it to one of his customers. He charged him like €200 to sell it.

Another convenient way to sell it.

You’d really want to trust your mechanic though.

Very true. Thankfully my dad has known him for a number of years. Was able to get a good deal for the car too.
