Hi guys. How would ye pronounce the old Irish word Solus? I know it means light. How would it be phonetically? Maybe 'so-lus'?

I'd imagine it would sound similar to how it sounds in different dialects today.

Hi IO. But that's solas and not solus.

Eh..That's because there is no Irish word "solus". The Irish for light is "solas".

He's looking for a word that was present in Medieval/"old" Irish. The word was spelled "solus" at the time.

I believe that the spelling was later standardised as "solas" in the 20th century, and would be pronounced much the same way now as it was then, but I am open to correction.

I imagine there would be next to no difference, as the final vowel is a schwa (unstressed vowel) in Connacht/Ulster eg. ə

    eDIL has following:
    http://dil.ie/38426

    With Etymology down as: so+lés
    so: http://dil.ie/search?search_in=headword&q=2%20so
    Lés: http://dil.ie/29993

I'm assuming the interest is due to the Solus Linux distrubution, i'm not all together sure why he called it Solus instead of Solas tbh.

Cheers dubhthach. Yes, it is regarding the GNU/Linux distro. :-)

Sorry! I missed the "old" in the OP.

No worries. :) Things tend to get awkward when pre-Caighdeán Oifigiúil stuff comes up!
