Commonly used terms you can't stand

What are the commonly used terms you cannot stand. There are 3 that stand out for me. Millennials, snowflakes and viral. Why?

Millennials is a term that has taken hold in the last few years. The strange thing is it means people born between the early to mid 1970s to the mid 1990s rather than the obvious 2000 which is referred to as generation Z. The term on its own I have no problem with but it is the media's mocking connotations when it is used that is problematic when it is ............

Usually mentioned along with the term snowflake. This term is often used by bullies and the like to degrade people who are more sensitive than them. When applied to a whole generation, this is not pleasant. People like Bill Cullen from an older generation tend to think the younger generation has it softer when in fact each generation brings its own problems and no generation is perfect.

Viral. Originally this was meant to mean some infection and then it began to mean a malicious software program. Now, it is a term used by the media to describe something they want to push that has been viewed many times on a media affiliated social media website. Very much a term that has become a soundbite of the Tubridy era.

I can’t stand when people use the word ‘feels’ for feelings. It drives me mad. I feel like I’m in some crappy American song when I hear it.

I see people constantly using the word “lit” to describe something that’s good. Annoys me quite a bit.

I'm not one to get too hung up on trivial-ish things but the use of the word retard or retarded to describe something/someone negatively really pisses me off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,782 ✭✭✭Damien360

Defin-ITE-ly with emphasis on the ITE. Drives me completely nuts when I hear it.

Not sure what viral has to do with tubirty but it's not used in the true meaning at all.
Something going viral isn't a a video/post that has a few thousand views over a period of weeks or months. Viral is millions in days.

    Common.
    Like a Dacia Duster common.
    That common people drive.

Hate that word even though it innocently didn't start life out with such connotations.

Tubridy is always using the term on his show. The latest viral sensation, up on the whatever site for a week and went viral, overnight viral sensation, etc. Of course, it is like a lot of these terms not used in its correct sense.

All neologisms, changes to meanings, changes to pronunciations, abbreviations, changes to spellings and Americanisms which came in after the year 1700. I can't stand them.

It's a good word ruined by people who haven't a clue.

In the context of advertising and sales and marketing it's meaningless.

"Reach out to" seems to be the current buzz word for "to contact". Drives me batty, reach out to him, is he sitting next to you or something?

Most buzzspeak is amusing or at least tolerable to me, but I hate this one.

It's that hippie "our business is about people, not profit margins, because we're progressive" nonsense that always seems to originate in the most cut-throat, customer-screwing, sexist/racist/whateverist companies.

"I've reached out to John for his thoughts..."

No. You're not a medium entreating him to give insights from beyond the veil, you just sent him a poorly-written email asking if you can have casual Fridays.

    It drives me mad!

My Mrs works for an American company, deals with Americans on a daily basis, last Sunday she asked me to call someone during the week on a family matter, she asked me to "reach out"

Well she can fcuk right off with that sh1te

    Simples.

    I'm not being funny.

The word 'oft' makes me squirmy for some reason.

On the appraisal forms of Mrs Jayesdiem's US based company is the actual question "does this employee GO TO BAT for the team". Makes me want to vomit.

Wellness. It sounds like a word that some hemp-wearing hippie living on a commune in rural Washington state dreamt up during one of their less lucid moments.

People saying "Awesome" all the time. I hate them.

People adding the word "Super" to everything. "I'm Super excited for something".

It's annoying enough when americans use those words, but when Irish people do it's absolute cringe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 244 ✭✭queueeye

Incorrect use of the word literally.
As in " I walked home in the rain and I'm literally drowned".

No you're fcukin not which literally is a shame. Literally!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,373 ✭✭✭tonycascarino

one that really annoys me is quality .
on its own its pointless. you need more info like good quality or bad quality .
    it pointless on its own

its like blood pressure. same thing high or low . no blood pressure and your dead so I'm sure you have some
