Looking at buying a Mini One, 2006 Petrol manual. Viewed one today and the test drive seemed OK. Few rust issues.

However friends are scaring me with stories of gearbox issues, drinking oil and so on.

Looking at 2, one with 88000 km the other with 142000 km

Early ones 02 to 04 models were most affected by this AFAIK, British Midland gearbox. Facelift 05 to 07 ones had Getrag box which was more reliable.
OH has an 05 Cooper with around 252k kms on it. Does burn a small bit of oil, a litre or so every 3 or 4,000kms, nothing too abnormal in my view. Only 2 medium issues had with it so far, few weeks after she bought it, spark plug we found loose, threads stripped in the head and had to get a time-sert put in. I check them regularly now and has been fine since (with plug changes in between). Other one was it used to misfire under load at nearly full or full throttle especially under 2,000rpm. Replaced coil pack after finding similar issue on US forums and it cured it.
Apart from usual wear and tear items; tyres, bushes, cv boots and recently a full set of brakes (discs were still original!), it’s been fine.
Also, electric power steering can stop working (it did on hers), pulled out the EHPS unit, stripped down, emptied out all the carbon from the brushes and has been sound since.
Great fun to drive though. Keep on top of regular maintenance and sort out things when they do crop up and you’ll be fine.
    HTH.
