How long does it usually take for them to give you a date for the driving test? I booked my test in mid January and haven't heard back from them about a date yet.

I'm only looking to sit the test in April /May so that's not why I'm in a hurry for the date but I do need to arrange some more lessons for myself and I'd like to arrange them for the few weeks beforehand. Should I contact them or is this standard practice?

You wait or ring looking for a cancellation, until one presents itself.

Usually they'll notify you of your date a few weeks in advance. If you simply wait to be scheduled, it could be six months or more before you'll get a test date these days. If you want one sooner, you'll want to ring them (preferably every morning) to check for a cancellation slot. Note that you'll want to be very flexible, ideally; if they have a slot available, it might be for a month from now or it might be for a couple hours from now, there's no telling.

Depends on where you are. In some places in Dublin 6-9 months, in some extreme cases maybe a year before you get a date. In some places outside of Dublin it can be as little as three months or less.

Thanks all for replying. I'm in Laois.

I might contact them then and ask roughly how much notice I'll get. I need to schedule some lessons for the few weeks before the test. If I were to sit it now I would fail spectacularly! I can think of better ways to waste €85 :)

They never arrange tests more than three months in advance. You will never receive more than 3 months notice before a test, for my two it was around a months notice on each. When you get that notice depends on how busy Laois is. Driving instructors from the area usually have the best idea of how long you'll be waiting if the Laois test centre don't tell you.

I applied mid November and got my notification this week for March, with a full month's notice. So that was a 3 month wait for notification and a 4 month wait for the actual test. I'm doing my test in Raheny.
