I have a few healthy heifers 24 months old that haven't come bulling. I have given them esturmate twice but nothing happened. Any advise would appreciated.

I had that and it took the coil to get them going

Scan them, possibility they may not be fertile, half twins etc. Had a heifer here with no uterus

Estrumate no use if they aren't already cycling, Would expect heifers with reasonable weights to be cycling by that age - maybe pedigree slower than cross breed. If you coil them should bring them on if not freemartins.

    Are they on slats?
Maybe they are coming in heat but theyre not showing it. Ive often seen heifers mad bulling every three weeks out at grass but not a peep out of them once theyre inside.

Let them out if you can. Easier to spot them. They should be bulling by 24 months. In fact they should be bulling by 12 months. Stick a cidr in them.

They should be calving at 24 months.

Can you try putting tail paint on them?could be that they are having weak heats with only a few mounts. Also I find if they are carrying a good bit of flesh it can have negative impact on them cycling.

My thoughts exactly Patsy,it’s doubtful they’re all free martins id say tail paint and let em out

The presence of a male might trigger them into action. Get a bull on a B & B transfer from a friend.

    i'd say off for burgers

Get a bull or better still send for burgers and buy back springers for near the same money and have a calf on the ground shortly.

A bit of grass in front of them and the sun on their back usually does the trick. They could be getting old again that happens though!

Sell them, why breed animals that don’t show signs by two year old? Are you sure your not missing them.

Throw a couple of strong weanlings bulls in with um and they pick um up for you in no time. They'll smell um coming in a day or 2 in advance. Them bull um and offload in an in calf heifer sale next autumn. They should be a decent size by then and should come into good money.

I find the scratch cards very good when I'm not around the place during the week.

If they were mine, I would PRID or CIDR coil them in order to start them cycling.
You will still have to inject with Estrumate, or equivalent prior to removing the coil.
The instructions should come with the coil. Your Vet will be able to advise you if you decide to use a Coil.

Estrumate or similar, on its own will only work if the cow or heifer is already cycling

While I agree with all the above my experience would be that Heifers that are slow to cycle usually end up being Cows that don't calve regularly. What I mean is you might have fertility issues going forward. Just out of curiosity do the Heifers have star ratings. Had a pedigree limousine here once and her performance on I c b f over first 60 months was not very productive. My own faulty for not moving her along

    This would be my thoughts.

Quick question - Is Lutalyse and Estrumate basically the same thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 170 ✭✭Wessel3

insert prids/cidrs day 1 and inject with ovarelin. eg wednesday
Pull cidrs 1 week later, and inject with estromate eg wednesday
inject with ovarelin 2 days later eg Friday (16 hours prior to service)
    serve eg saturday
vet told me that, not sure of results yet

Yes, both prostaglandin. Estrumate is 2ml IM, can't remember the dosage of Lutalyse.
