Suggestions for alternatives to V70?

    About to change the car shortly from a Volvo V50 because although it is cracking car, boot is too small for our needs with a bumper buggy and dog cage that occasionally travel together.

    Pre V50 we had a bangernomics 2.0 petrol V70 and it was ideal as it fitted these two items side by side and crucially the buggy could lie on its wheels and be rolled out.

    Was planning on getting another 10 year old petrol V70. Trouble is have now discovered 2008 was year of flexifuel which I don't want and after mid 2008 tax on petrol V70s is €1200 per annum which I am not keen on.

    I am keeping an eye out for early 2008 petrol and also considering a late 08/09 diesel, but whilst I wait for something to crop up I thought I'd consider alternatives.

    Any good ideas for sub 5k estate car with a boot at least as wide as a V70?!

    The flexifuel engine, as far as I know, had only a few modifications to the standard. Included things like hardened valves/seals, different fuel hose/fittings, more compliant ECU settings and an extra sensor or two, if even.

    The trade off with making the car more compliant and less tuned as such, is fuel economy, but to be honest I can't see that being any more than a few % all told when running on petrol only. A 2.0 petrol isn't going to be particularly efficient anyway.

    I have an S40 with the 1.8F and it's been basically trouble free over 4 years and 130k km.

    The reason I a little anti them is I've heard the service interval is something insane like every 8000 km, what is the interval on your engine?
