Anxiety about farting in public

This sounds completely ridiculous but I have an intense anxiety about farting or pooping my pants in public. Im in University and sitting in quiet classes can sometimes be excruciating and I sometimes have to leave early as the anxiety becomes too much and I eventually convince myself that im going to fart or soil myself. This would be the most embarrassing thing to happen and I fear that it will every day. I know its utterly ridiculous but its such an intense anxiety that its interfering with my life. I wont go on any dates or stay over night with a potential partner out of fear that this might happen. I also have to make sure that I have access to a private toilet where no one else will be around where ever I am incase I have to go. I dont know where this anxiety comes from but its excruciating. Guessing im alone in this one but can anyone relate?

Maybe contact GP about anxiety issues in general. On another note, I know a few vegetarians (and vegans) who use supplements to combat the consequences of a very fibrous diet :) I think activated charcoal tablets are good for gas and I know theres another one, which I can't remember the name of but if you check out local health food store (or even google and order online) you'll find there are products out there which reduce those kind of emissions . I know, I'm just a bucket of wonderful knowledge. Best of luck op

I agree with above. Worth talking to someone in a good health food shop Or your gp. The anxiety about the 'what if' could be increasing the likelihood so youre caught in a vicious circle.
Getting a handle on the anxiety will help enormously.
    Good luck

All anxiety is horrible to deal with so please don't be calling it ridiculous!!

I would say, for a start to maybe consciously decrease the amount of fiber in your diet. Obvioulsy it's important to get enough to but if your eating a lot of legumes, fruit and green veggies then sharting is more of a possibility.

Perhaps if you eliminate the possibility of it happening it might help your logical brain to dismiss these thoughts easier when they enter your mind.

I used to suffer with IBS and found the low FODMAP diet amazing, it's a bit of a nightmare to get your head around at first but it would be pretty much impossible to have an episode like you descibe by following it.

    Best of luck x
