Man, you weren't even kidding: it's rare those "it's X meets Y" comments are 100% on the money, but that Skyscraper looks so like those 2 inspirations, it's positively shameless. At least with The Rock as its lead there's a chance it's vaguely watchable.

Neve Campbell? That should see a spike in YouTube hits of THAT scene.

I would immediately love this film forever if The Rock missed the jump, fell to his death & the film just ended right there. It could be precisely 40 minutes long (IIRC this qualifies as feature-length according to the Academy), and be the greatest troll blockbuster ever made :)

    Dwayne McClane.
I'm looking forward to it. Love the Rock. Couldn't look at Jumanji because the little loudmouth gobshît is in it.

I would much prefer an original property that inspiration from those films than straight-up remakes of those films.

This looks like mindless fun. Really interesting choice to make the main protagonist an amputee.

To be fair, his 'disabilty' seems to extend to gazing wistfully into the distance when putting on his pants. Other than that he doesn't seem affected in the slightest.

Funnily enough, that kind of happened in The Other Guys.

Hard to tell from a minute trailer, also the character is ex-military so I don't have to much trouble believing he'd be able to keep in shape and live a relatively normal life, I'm not saying it isn't a disability but look at some of the paralympians. I also just think a step in the right direction towards portraying people with disabilities, even if that person is played by The Rock.

This feels like the most 90's action thriller that the writers of Sandra Bullock's 'The Net' and the producers of Die Hard 2 could come up with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,871 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

I saw this today.... Its exactly what you would expect..basically a die hard towering inferno knock off.. Right down to the bad euro villains.. Seriously cheesy and riddled with plot holes, also some of the acting is absolutely bloody dire...I literally lost count of how many times he was hanging off things.. But the rock has the charisma and kinda pulls it off... 6/10

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 11,106 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fysh

As above, it's a textbook 6/10 middle-of-road forgettable summer blockbuster. Its biggest weakness is that it never gets out of the shadow of Die Hard, though it does at least lampshade the similarity at one point which kind of legs the audience acknowledge the similarity and move on. And, well, Johnson has enough charisma to breathe at least a bit of life into a very rote script.

To its credit, it doesn't outstay its welcome. There are several clunky scenes and plenty of Expositing To Camera scenes, but nothing too egregious. The worst crime it commits is the time spent on setting up the climactic scene, which is pretty meh as it is, but is worse if you realise that
it's basically a CGI-enhanced version of the climactic scene in Tango & Cash
    .

I was ready for a dumb fun action flick (I've recently being going through Arnold's back catalog. I was on board during the first act but my patience with the movie started to wear thin after that. Just too many moments of characters falling, suddenly grabbing something and pulling themselves up. And the C-level henchmen from Die Hard were more interesting than the main bad guy. It is completely uninspired and forgettable.

I find Dwayne Johnson's career a little frustrating. He has the charisma and insane physique that Arnold had, but unlike Arnold who was lucky to have worked with top class innovative directors such as Cameron, McTiernan and Verhoeven which resulted in classic genre films, Johnson seems to be stuck with mundane scripts and uninspiring directors.

Saw Skyscraper this morning in IMAX and I have to say that I enjoyed it more than expected. Even though you know Johnson will always make it, there were scenes where I was gripping the chair armrest. It’s very straightforward in terms of story and action, and the main baddie is merely a footnote, but it’s decent craic. Johnson is hugely engaging and it’s good to see Neve Campbell back on the big screen.

So I seen this today. I went in with low expectations but have to say I really enjoyed it. There was even some good humour in it. The script and the story were quit good and it certainly kept you on the edge of your feet. If you want to go see a fun film then this is worth going to see. I thought all the acting was decent. I agree the bad guy is not in it much and the last seen could have been better but it was still fun. I give it 7 out of 10.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Saw it last night and it was better than I expected it to be.

I wonder if there will be an unrated cut when it goes to blu-ray/streaming?
It had potential to show some teeth, but most of the violence was out of shot so it came across as very tame.

Have American audiences reached Peak Dwayne? :) I mean it feels like he's in a blockbuster every 6 months, one'd wonder if the man is a bit overused at this stage!

What's the chance that this will get a sequel? What does it have to make to break even?

Seem's Dwayne's now coming under fire for taking the role (like Scarlet was last week) for playing a disabled person!

I can see the wriggle room with the ScarJo controversy; it was a "prestige" production, indie scale clearly for the artistic merit. Why not hire someone with a personal connection.

But getting cranky about a Dwayne Johnson spectacle blockbuster shows a crucial lack of understanding about the most basic of Hollywood marketing. Not to mention obvious clickbait too

Well Forbes have just announced he's not only the highest paid actor in the world in the past year but hes the highest paid in the history of their rich list with $124m. No actor has ever made that much in a calender year. He makes millions from his Instagram page alone where he's the most followed actor in the world.

All he needs to now is start working with more credible directors like Arnie did at his peak.

    I would think slim.
RE break even, It all depends an Asia I would think.
They say a film has to roughly make 2.5 times its budget to break even.
    So budget was 125-129million dollars.
So it needs to make roughly 310 to break even...it could struggle...
27.5 opening in US and Canada is pretty poor.

Saw this last night and thought it was the silliest movie I've seen since The Transporter.
Owner of building didn't look remotely concerned at anytime
Kids were annoying (as all movie kids have / tend to be)
Explained the actual reason for the fire in 1 minute???
No real explanation why his mate shafted him or didnt just try to steal the tablet

Some enjoyable parts, but 3/10 for me

Some entertaining moments and visually impressive set pieces, but on the whole not entertaining enough. Maybe I didn't get my brain switch to the Off position early enough!

Seen it at the weekend, its a big pile of meh TBH and I didnt expect anything more, it passed an evening as a forgettable summer flick.

You have to hand it to Johnson, his striking while the iron is hot approach to taking roles has led him to insane riches but the roles are pretty much cut, copy and paste jobs from one film to another.

As has been said already he has the chance to be a new Arnie but I think films and peoples expectations have moved well beyond Arnies 80s/90s jaunts around our screens, even from the "big dumb" action films.

I openly despise the Fast & Furious movies but hes pretty much saved the franchise and stopped it from going stale, IMO.

The spin offs hes penciled into with Statham will make him and the studio even more money.

Ah, it's one of those films where once you start picking nits you could be there for hours. For instance:
the building owner does a background check on Johnson's character, but either doesn't know or doesn't care that the "insurance company" rep is actually there working with the organised crime syndicate; the placement of an override control panel inside a working wind turbine with no standard access route; everything about how the remote monitoring facility was being run (randos getting in with no security check while carrying live firearms, ffs)

    It's a phenomenally dumb film.
