Does anyone know which golf course was used in the filming of Roddy Doyle's 1996 'The Van' - where Larry attempts to give Bimbo a lesson?
    Thanks

I'm pretty much sure it was the par 3 course in Deer Park, Howth.

    Cheers John,
The only other answer I've had (Twitter) is St Anne's Pitch & Putt, in Dollymount. I'll have to make a call or two.

I hadn't seen that clip, I am sure it's deer park, look at the flag heights, they look very small, more like pitch and putt.

I'm open ears on this J.

An interesting one for northsiders - but how on earth could a cinematographer go to Deer park and offer such a poor scene.
You would have to drive/walk past what my Dad would call "millionaires view".

The trees are very mature - so you are right about it looking like it and the par 3 aspect / Pitch and putt is a give away.

But in that time Pitch and Putt was fairly in - and you have the likes of St Anne's park and you could list off 4/5 more.

Did think for a second Clontarf golf club with poles placed for scene.

But I'm probably over thinking again and it is Deer Park :D

"Ya ****ing clown" - a good one that :D

I've only ever played the main course at Deer Park and not the par 3 but is the par 3 not a bit hillier than that. The course in the video above looks fairly flat to me.

Yes that was in my mind too

But Deer park is massive and there are flat parts in part of it.

Deer park must have been the biggest piece of golf land in Ireland ever. I know likes of Carton in modern Ireland pushed it.

But you had the original 9
    The 18
    The 12 hole par 3
The 18 hole pitch and putt

The original 9 then became 2 9s and the 18 was changed.

The place was and is nuts and worth some amount of money if it was rezoned.

Incredible public facility in its day. Horrible walk up to it with clubs on your back as I did 100s of times.

I've been assured it's St Anne's Pitch & Putt by someone who was there when it was being filmed.

    Thanks for the help.

If anyone's interested, it's for a piece appearing in tomorrow's Irish Examiner - on golf in the movies... where it's not a golf movie. So Goldfinger rather than Tin Cup.

Too late now but one of my favourite films Sideways has a class one.

Glad my doubt was right - because if I seen footage of Deer Park and didn't recognise it - I would give up hope for this ageing dimming brain and too much Rioja - and not ****ing Merlot.

I grew up playing St Anne’s a lot and to me it looks like the 2nd or 9th hole on it. I am fairly sure it’s not Deer Park, looks nothing like it to be honest.

Here's a link to the 10 movie scenes. Fix, Sideways is in there you'll be pleased to see!

    Good piece Kevin.

2 that i immediately thought of not on your list.

Scene in The Aviator where Di Caprio and Cate Blanchetts characters are playing.
    Quality film!

Also Swingers with Jon Favreau hits the course for a few holes with Ron Livingston.
When they tot up their scores after a hole reminds me of a few i know.
"Did you have an 8 or a 9? Ill put you down for an 8"

Both were on my 'long list'. I particularly wanted to include Swingers because of that "Did you have an 8 or a 9? I'll put you down for an 8." quote. Quality stuff.
