Gas fired open vented central heating noise

My heating system is noisy. Not pops or gurgles I would associate (rightly or wrongly) with an airlock but more a constant whooshing hum type noise I can hear from almost anywhere in the house.

1995 built, 4 bed detached, original Ideal Classic boiler in the utility. Hot water tank in upstairs airing cupboard. Wilo pump is fitted above boiler and was replaced once by amateur about 10 years ago.

I use one bedroom and turn off 3 bedroom and upstairs bathroom rad except for visitors. All rads heat fine when on. No TRV fitted.

It's noisy to the point of being slightly irritating. I am wondering is there a speed setting on the pump I can turn down? Any ideas? Thanks.

Is the water in the expansion tank hot?.

I will have to check, it's a bit of palaver to get a ladder into the house and up there so it might be a whilst before I get back.

If it was hot what might this indicate? Thanks.

If it's hot, it's called pitching. when the pump forces the water up the expansion pipe if it's the path of least resistance.

The water will be forced up the expansion pipe even in a perfectly plumbed system. That’s how it works.

Water should never be forced up the expansion except in an overheat problem.

And where should the expanding hot water go?

Expanding and pitching are 2 different things.
How much water expands up the pipe in normal circumstances?.

Of course they are different. Pitching is indicative of a problem, expansion is normal.

Off the top of my head, about 4% of system volume.
