2003 vw transporter T4 2.5tdi SWB blue i, showing 183k miles on clock. Has an intermittent problem which seems worse when starting from cold but does occur when warm as well. Out of nowhere engine starts labouring, putting out smoke then cutting out. Does it every so often. Heater plug light is flashing all the time as well. Van drives well besides, no smoke when driving, pulls well through gears. Any advice appreciated,

Has the fuel filter been changed recently?

Could the fuel pump be on its way out and starving the engine of fuel?

I haven't had any diagnostics done yet and its probably due a service alright. I hope it's not the diesel pump anyway as that sounds expensive. It's driving 100% again. The glow plug light is flashing away too. Vw expert looking at it tomorrow so fingers crossed.

Fuel filter could be solid with crud, usually a neglected item on a service

    Fingers crossed it's not

Hopefully it's a cheap and easy fix

Let us know how it goes

Have a route around the vw forums online, could point you in the right direction

Got van back today all sorted, pump timing was off and was causing the problem. Guy also got rid of a strange noise by tightening up a nut to proper torque and also fixed a tensioner. Top man.
