Gf is looking for a new car, she has her mind down to Nissan Micra or Toyota Yaris. Both are 1lt but she can't decide between the two.
I though the Yaris engine sounded loud when on the test drive didn't notice the Micra as much.
Anyone any thoughts on which would be better.

    Is your girlfriend over 70?

Unfortunately the Yaris is not what it used to be. As in, as good as the Mk1. I'm not sure about the micra..

Yaris for sure, it is quite easy to service, low insurance, tax.

Surely tax and insurance would be pretty much the same for a micra?

Yes, it should be. Problem is I personally don't like micra shape as it looks like a "ladybird". :D
Do you plan to buy a brand new or a secondhand? If second hand, look for at least registration from 2010. Benefit is you would get much cheaper insurance for a newer car.

Well.... we are not in Africa so you wont really need an air con:D. Just felling a bit hot in summer but wont be too hot and I think it is perfectly fine.

A 2018 car without air con is going to be pretty much impossible to resell in the future. Even in Ireland. But why would the Yaris not have air con?

Because they don’t have to put it on as standard to sell them.

Living in the south east, air con is a god send in the summer- last summer had some really hot, humid weather. I'd have found driving seriously uncomfortable without it. No way I'd have a new car without it, basic item but typical of stingy Toyota not to throw it in.
If this is the new model Micra then I'd have it all day long. Much newer, fresher car and actually quite stylish. Unlike the invalid carriage that is the Yaris. You found it noisy, because it is.

Mrs bought new Micra 5 months ago or so and I've spent a lot of time driving it. 0.9 turbo. An absolute cracker of a car. It's the top spec unit though, so cannot attest to how other cars in the range fare. Not just 'grand for town' - it is that and more. Great fun on B roads and very decent on motorways - albeit interesting on days when there's a strong wind blowing, but then anything that light will be...

Unless there's a gale blowing/floods or I need to lug a big load, it's the set of keys I'll reach for if I need to get anywhere.

Definitely the Micra. It's the better and newer car of the two. Did she have a look at the new Seat Ibiza and VW Polo as well both not long our the Ibiza if you want style and the Polo if you just want boring still a very good car do with some high tech kit.
Mazda 2 is another lovely car.

    Peace and long life.

That's a silly view regarding air conditioning and usually held by people who never had or used it. Ireland is the perfect country for air conditioning, the damp rainy weather makes using air conditioning to demist and remove moisture from the interior ideal. You don't have to live in the Sahara to need air conditioning but I bet the obligitory Padre Pio sticker would be more appealing to some people.

OP, how did you arrive at just these two cars, there are a multitude of other small cars on the market these days that are as good or better than these two.

    @toyotafanboy

    A bit bias, no?

As for the 'ladybird' comment... you do know there is a brand new micra now??

And as for the aircon bit, are you trying to justify the lack of a/c in the lower model Yaris?

Hi OP. New to boards here. Is it ok to PM you a link regarding your thread?
I' m not too sure about the protocol here.

Maybe I like Toyota so a bit bias. I' seen brand new micra and really still dont like its shape. My mom's Yaris car is 2008 w/o air con and when a bit hot in summer but I feel fine. Just from my personal view to share only. A car with air con might cost higher . That would be a reason why some Toyota car brands do not have air con in Ireland to reduce cost?

Toyota car models you mean. Toyota is the brand the only other brand Toyota have here is Lexus and yes they I would say have 4 zone climatronic air con and more maybe as standard no doubt with individual controls for everyone in the car and maybe on app to control it too.

Sorry for the mistake. Yes, I mean Toyota models.
