Eir messup

    So long story short…ish (TLDR!!)

I initiated a switch from Sky to Eir (back on 7th Dec 2017) as Sky were increasing my monthly charges I could exit my contract early with them.
Eir never did the required stuff in the background in time (they delayed by 2 and half week) to get me out of my contract so Sky were trying to charge 170 Euro early exit fee.
So I contacted Eir and cancelled my order and rang Sky and informed them of the mix up and they removed any exit fees – all happy and back as normal…..so I thought

Early January I got a letter from Sky to say ‘Sorry you are leaving – here's your final bill + 170 early exit fee!!’
I immediately rang Sky and explained situation
I then rang Eir and they apologized and ensured me it’s a mistake on Eir side so they stopped the transfer of account

All fine and dandy…..so I thought

I got a text from Eir 3 days ago to say I could view my bill online and when I checked they seem to have taken over my phone line but not my Broadband. BTW the Eir bill was for 178 Euro as they were charging me 150 Euro early exit fee from my Broadband account – the cheek!

So again I have been on to Eir and yes indeed they neglected to cancel the order the 2nd time for the phone so they have taken that over. Also rang Sky and my Broadband remains with them and is working away without issue

In the long run we don’t really use the house phone so my question is….

Can I cancel my phone with Eir (they are trying to charge 58 Euro per month for a ‘phone only’ account – I will not be paying that) and keep my Broadband with Sky. Essentially have a broadband only account with Sky and no phone account or is there a requirement to have an active phone account with someone?
I can’t be without broadband as I work from home sometimes and also our home has lots of smart stuff that needs broadband (heating, lights etc)

Eir have really made a mess and they have received a lot of angry calls from me and they have agreed to not charge me anything this month (nice of them really!!)

You're doing whats called "line sharing" at the minute. To transition from that to standalone bitstream/NGA (fake phone number broadband only) might be possible with a live connection but it might require a cancellation and reprovide.

Skys reps should know, but whether or not they actually do is a whole other story.

Phoned Sky and they said I need an active phone number as my Broadband comes via a phone connection (now I thought that was the old dial up and not FTTC)

They said the only option was to transfer everything to Eir and then transfer back to Sky but I think the guy was just trying to get me off the phone as he didn't want to deal with it

No way I want to go through that pain. Also means I would most likely have to sign up to a new contract with Sky - again I don't want that

You do need a number, but not a phone service. Standalone is an option where you get a number like 8883-1111111 that just references the broadband line.

I don't envy you one bit.

FTTC is fibre to the cabinet and a normal phone line from the cabinet to your house.

Ya normal copper to the house but as I understand it I don't have to have a live telephone number to ensure the broadband travels down the line from the cabinet

Any ideas what I need to ask for when I am speaking with the Eir or Sky folks.

1 option I will be trying is that it continues as is but I would not pay Eir for their phone number service. I don't mind paying a nominal fee for the line rental so broadband will work but I ain't paying 58 Euro a month to Eid for something I never signed up to

If you cancel from Eirs side I suspect the bb line will suddenly drop dead.

Ideally Sky should port the phone back in, they should be able to do this without starting from scratch.

They called to my house last week with a great sales pitch so I thought ok I give them a chance the WORST decision I have made 🀢 4 days later. No internet I rang and rang getting all sorts of excuses under the sun it was my line they said first, then it was my cable between the phone and the modem and then my bundle was not yet completed! Why so many different people dealing the same problem come back with different answers, I was with Vodafone up last Monday and there was nothing wrong with the line, I have 14 days to get out but all I need is a few hrs they call at 9 pm at night all happy then I’m left sighing nothing. STAY AWAY FROM EIR I’m back to Vodafone on Monday
