Quick car tax question

    Hey all

Put a deposit down on a new car in the first week of January but it was delayed and I'm picking it up Fri or Mon.

The car I'm driving is out of tax tonight. It's being taken as a trade in. If I sell this car on Friday or Monday, what's the situation with the tax? Am I liable to pay for Feb as I owned it for the first day or two, or once it's sold can I just forget about it and move on with my life?

    Cheers :)

Once it's sold forget about it

That works out well as you get the whole month of Feb tax on new car.

    Sell it on no worries.

Cops usually allow a month before any issues anyway.

If you happen to be driving it to sell or trade in etc.

    Not always.
The law is a car must have tax displayed if on the road.

Op just don't drive or park your car on the road from 1feb as it can be deemed illegal by AGS.

They will be fine for a couple of days. It's Not everyone that can rush into the tax office on the first day of the month and not everyone can do it online either.

I have to drive it to work tomorrow and to the dealership on Friday unfortunately!

I'm reasonably confident that were I stopped at absolute worst I would have ten days to display? Just pay it and get it posted.

There is no leeway in the law despite what everyone says.:D

Legally, no you can't drive it.
Realistically, drive on. Extremely unlikely anything will happen on the 1 day. Mine was out for best part of January I did go through 1 checkpoint and was waved on.

Drive on op. No Garda will bat an eyelid at you. Just be careful parking on the street. Those swines would do their own father( if they knew him). As said, there will be no tax liability and you will get the full month with your new car. Best of luck with your new motor.

That may be the case but there has to be a bit of common sense applied too.

Id say once or twice ever I taxed a car on the first day of the month, work commitments always meant It wasn't possible for me to do so. Never had any issues.

That's why everyone has a full month to tax their car before tax expires, so you don't need to run the 1st.

That's why people get notified of their due date for renewal before it's due.

There is no leeway in law. Any leeway given by AGS is purely at their discretion.
Saying people have a month is untrue and dangerous for people's pockets!

There is a 7 day(or maybe 10, can't remember exactly) leeway in the motor tax system to allow a date to be changed to the first of the month in the event of postal applications. This is to allow for postal delays, bank holidays etc but the postage date must be in the previous month.

The wasn't the case before, unless things have changed since.

I think you didn't read what I've written.

Example: My tax expires 31st January 2018.
I'm allowed to tax my car (either directly through motortax office or online) from 1st of January. So if I decide to tax for 3 months, and go there there on 5th January, I would get tax valid until 30th April 2018.

It was like that since at least 2007 (so as long as I remember) but IMO very likely much longer.

you can as Cini0 says tax your car early if you so wish, the tax will follow on from your current disc. He was not suggesting you had a month to tax your car after the tax expires.

    Missed that bit.

But people saying you're ok for a period of time after it expires are just plain wrong..but I'm sure they'll pay the fines for those who believe them:cool:

Vino is correct, you can tax your car any time in the last months tax, in his example January. Likewise you can also tax it up to @24 th Feb without incurring any arrears. The new disc would commence on Feb 1st and expire on April 30.
Therefore the op is ok to drive for a few days before he trades in his car.

no penalties other than a fine for non-display or not having tax.

Did you read my earlier post re parking?. I'd take the chance in any court if I had a history of paying and went a week or two without,so long as the tax was paid (all be it 2 weeks late).
