    Hi i have lots of questions i have an infection in my tooth/gum was at dentist on monday says i need root canal..he gave me 375 distaclor as i had itching skin from penicillin. I rang doc today as im up 3 nights now with awful pain and thought maybe antibiotics are not working..i had 4 taken so far ..2 per day. Doc gave me augmentin duo liquid form 5ml 3 times a day chemist tell me its childs antibiotic except i ave to take 5ml more each day (doc may have given cos i suffer wit tummy) but i dont know if i should stick with distaclor or just change to augmentin..does one work quicker than the other

    Op, augmentin contains amoxicillin which is part of the pinicillin family of antibiotics. If you have a history of mild allergy, then your Doctor would not have wanted to give you a higher dose.

    Unfortunately GPs treatment of dental infection is limited to antibiotics/analgesics, which often do not cause the pain to subside. You need to contact your/a dentist and decide whether you want root canal treatment or the tooth removed. Medication alone offers only limited benefit.
