Is range not an issue for a car that will need to cover a lot of daily kilometres?

Its been a sticky at the top of the page since November 2017 :)

Good idea and it might tempt some to make the swap, I looked into it for my father in law, but it only covers plug in hybrids or full EV, and at 68, he's not one to go plug in.

he has settled for a Prius, so its better than his dirty diesel.

Nothing in the article to suggest that taxi drivers in the rest of the country are excluded

Are there any accessible taxis which would qualify for this grant? Is there any minimum period the vehicle has to remain a taxi? I don't think this is a great idea.

I can't imagine a car that needs 8 hours for a fill up would be much use as a taxi

Clearly they won't be charging on a slow AC charger. If they need a topup during the day it will be via a rapid (30mins... lunch break!).

There are already EV taxis in the country so they do work but being dependent on the public rapids is a risk alright. They really should have their own rapids at their ranks..... some taxi companies in the UK do that.

Even better TFL have installed a number of Taxi Only Rapids across London.
    TFI should do the same.

    30 mins in the garage.
Sounds like you haven’t done your research ;)

Someone should tell the 200 or so Tesla Taxi's in Amsterdam they are doing it all wrong!

    :D

A girl in work heard a manager planning Tesla purchase. I heard her saying; "I saw them all over the place in Holland.. I thought they were some sort of special taxi car!" Not exactly the image he was going for. ;)

30 mins to get a substantial charge on a FCP.
FCPs are generally located in the grounds of "garages", or if you like, filling stations.

Except TFL have made electrics compulsory, for TFI to provide fast chargers they would need to do the same.

    Explain your logic on this.
TFI can fund the installation of public transport infrastructure, it's one of their main reasons to exist. Charging infrastructure for Taxi's can be seen as infrastructure.

    Petrol Stations.
They contain Fast Charge Points (FCP).
80% charge in 20 mins give or take and currently free!

Located throughout the country as per the eCars Map available online.

Hah. I thought a garage is where you repair cars.

Hah. I thought a garage is where you repair cars.

    One word...several auto related meanings.

    Garage = petrol station
    Garage = auto repair shop
Garage = parking spot attached to house with a roof and door

The logic is that they ar forcing people to use them and will be charging for them commercially.

In Ireland there’s no criteria to go electric. So therefore any chargers instslled will be severely under-utilised compared to the ones in London, therefore the case for providing them is very low

So taxis in Dublin should use the over utilised public rapid chargers instead? I hope TFI are slightly more forward thinking than you.

I’m very forward thinking. If there’s only a small uptake of electric taxis then they are pissing money away. Bringing in mandatory electric taxis ensures that there is a user base so there’s payback for putting in a proper charger network.

First of all a few things, the rule for London is that all new Black Cabs most be either electric or plug in hybrid from this year. A few things to note about that:

    - It doesn't apply to the thousands of Hackney's that operate in London with the likes of Uber [1]
    - It includes plug-in hybrids [2]
    - It only applies to new vehicles, old cars can continue to operate for 15 years.

[1] In fairness Uber is setting it's own rules saying all it's cars most be at least plug-in hybrid from 2020. But not required by regulators.

[2] They have 80 miles battery and then a 1.5 litre petrol REX engine.

Coming back to Ireland. A good way the government to incentivise EV's is by offering a cheap taxi license to EV's. A Taxi License normally costs a steep €6,300, however it costs only €125 for a license for a wheelchair accessible car. They could offer the same deduction to new EV taxis.

€6,300 isn’t really expensive to open a business

No, but I would hazard a guess that they need more than a license for the business. Knocking 6k off would be one less barrier.

    That’s just the Licence.
    You then need a car.
    Equipment.
    Testing
    Certification.
Insurance for taxi drivers at the moment is mental. You actually cannot get insurance as a new taxi driver, you have to get 4 refusals, go to the taxi driver federation and they will force one company to quote you. You then have to pay what they ask. Expect about 5k in the first year.

Ignoring the car purchase, I would guess a cost of about 6300 for plate, 4-5k for insurance. 1k for equipment, fitting and sealing by SGS.

5k doesn't sound madness for a full time taxi driver? So if going for an accessible ev you could save 7k from the grant and only pay the 125 license

Is this the same as the EV version?

The 40kWh eNV200 will see it's first delivery in April. I have a deposit down on one of the panel vans.
The 24kWh has a ~20-25km lower range than the 24kWh Leaf so it's not very suitable for taxi duty.
The 40kWh has a sold 200km real world range in mixed duty and probably 30-50km better in city driving/traffic below 80km/h, which is more than most Dublin taxi drivers do in a day.

Apologies for the misunderstanding. I picked up your brief post wrong. I haven't personally experienced any difficulty in getting a taxi when needed although I would crawl through broken glass to avoid having to get one. Any taxi driver in bed on a Saturday night mustn't need the money.

I just got my quote as a first time taxi driver 5k...go again....€ 8,560 add the €250 licence fee the €90 testing fee(per test) the fact that some drivers in my position then go rent at around 2-250e a week for car and plate throw in another 80-100quid a week on fuel among other expenses its no easy game to get started in. Even if you buy electric in under the assumption there's not a different plate for electric cars there for 55-70e p/w to rent a plate for it. The these grants do take the sting out of it but still a very expensive game to start of in.
