Failed unmodified car

I failed my NCT at Deansgrange yesterday on 2 items, one being front window tint.

Thing is, car is stock just as it left the factory, Saab 93 Aero's have front tinted windows as standard. I had a bit of a go and the tester ran his nail over the top edge of the window, he refused to pass it saying meter says its out of spec even though there is obviously no film. He actually looked embarrassed. The other failure was subjective (steering link play). Less than 2 days before a garage I trust did a steering check and 4 wheel tracking. Is this a revenue scam? Last NCT at Deansgrange the car was perfect and they failed me on high oil level.

They might fail you on the tint being over 7 years old!

I thought the tint was done with a meter and it’s either a pass or fail, surely it’s not left to be subjective ??

As for play in steering, I don’t see much you can do only work on it.

If you believe the windows aren't excessively tinted just go back for the re-test, you'll get a different tester and he'll pass it.

Just because the tracking was done, doesn't mean there isn't wear somewhere along the steering system. The test results are based on the inspectors opinion that you failed, so it doesn't matter if your mechanic says they were ok, the mechanic who checked it thinks they weren't and you can't get a cert without him unfortunately.

Sometimes the NCT can be a little too scrutinous of certain things, which may have happened to you, but the easiest thing to so is get the steering fixed and pass. They aren't failing cars with spurious faults to meet quotas. Revenue could probably think of an easier and more cost effective way to fleece you than set up and outsource a country wide vehicle inspection network to get an extra €28 quid from you every two years.

    .

Some of these NCT testers are no more of a mechanic ,than my dog . That is my experience of some of them . :)

All NCT inspectors are qualified vehicle motor mechanics with national craft certificate.

    Back on topic please.

Toyotafanboi is right - go back for the re-test and it will probably be passed by a different tester, perhaps do it in a different NCT centre

Perhaps not - I heard a tester tell a customer he was not a mechanic

If you like you can start a thread specifically on that topic, but let's stick with the OP's issues in this one
