    Market Gates:
Othegre has been on the road for a month now. The storm had intensified only a few days in and she was forced to remain in the village of Zybin until it passed. The people were only too happy to help the dark stranger and her dwarven friend, especially given the latter's threats (and the former's unsettling eyes).

As the cart saunters into Zassan they enter in through a gate leading to a market district.

    ASIhB3.jpg

It is clear that some kind of parade is underway beneath a tower. Othegre would take no notice save that the Zassanite soldier points out that writing along the tower reads "Tower of the Mighty Ekbard" in Zassani. The cart itself is stopped at the gates, but a glare from Kim, who descend with full beholder might from high in the sky, leaves little more questions from the gate guards.

High atop some of the old temples, the city's native vampires take note, a lord of some strength has arrived. The current lord is informed.

    7CVIab.jpg

    Tower Of Ekbard:
The arrival of Goodie and Ekbard in the city was treated with fanfare and pomp. Word of Ekbard's might in the battle with the Judge had reached the city and the taming of the mythical Dragvil only added further splendor to his legend. A group of eight Zassanite elite guards came to him for fighting guidance each day in this training monolith, as well as archer's coming to Goodie for advice.

Several Mages also visited, as Goodie's powers broke the laws of magic as they knew them.

Obviously the trainees pay Ekbard with a different alcoholic beverage every day. There are rumours other nerosians will be arriving to seek training.

    Borbois Estate:
Another of the Borbois Estate entrances existed in the city from back in the Old Kingdom's days. It linked up with the Zharrkazad estate entrance somehow within that fairy tale realm, but Kal and Flak would have to find their own way out.

    Poor district:
Skin cracked and burned, wobbling from side to side and amnesiac Moy collapses into a disused clothing stall. His blurred vision only permits him a glimpse of the temple of Nír in the distance, it's main murals glimmering in the sun. He holds a green cloth reading "Serpents of the Deep". Its meaning forgotten to him.

    Harbour:
A powerful gathering of trumpets, drums and symbols resonates across the city. The ambassador ship from Zassan's main trading partner has arrived. The first since that partner was joined with the dwarven enclave of Dwarrowtown to form a single nation, the Free Protectorate of the North.

    BW9cDF.jpg

The Zassani priests shift nervously on their feet as their sand jars continue to spin faster as the ship approaches. The jars indicate the power of the individual on board. The rate as the ship docks worries them deeply.

With a heavy thud the head Cleric of Vergadain, Ambassador and Saviour of Soetrard, BandyLegs the Primex Retributor MacGillicuddy steps from the ship and onto the gangway. It is difficult to tell which frightens them more, the war axe crackling with lightning, the helm made of the reworked ancient Kyrtin crown of the dark mage "The Judge", the reaper-like face within, or the skull of a mature Golden Dragon forming the figurehead of the ship.

The head of the council greets BandyLegs.

"Honorable cleric, it is good to see you"

    OOC: Map of Zassan

Areas of interest circled. It is big!

Bandylegs bows towards the Zassani priests.

'Aye. And good ter be here as well laddies. I am sure ye have heard of all that happened in Soetrard? There is a new king, but I be his eyes and ears.'

He looks towards the ship and calls up the gangplank.

'Send the envoy forth, I will not journey too much further till I have worshipped Vergadain.'

Turning back to the priests: "There have been rumours of a Nerosian and a Halfling within the walls of the city. I must speak with them, but I fear what they will do when I tell them what has happened since our parting. I dinnae wish fer any violence, but the Halfling stole something from me and I cannae be sure he means well. If they are within the city, my envoy will treat with them. Can ye show them the way?'

    Bandylegs paces the pier.

'I have important scrolls in my possession. I wish to store them in the largest, most secure vault ye have until my departure. Show me the way and we can discuss tidings whilst we walk.'

    City Harbour:
"Men, take the Soetrardian envoy to the Tower of Ekbard immediately"

    He turns to BandyLegs.

"We have constructed a temple to Vergadain in anticipation of your arrival Lord Retributor...." he glances at the mages who point in a concerned way to the rotation of the sand, almost a tornado within the jars "...you may worship freely there. You can accompany us to the vault afterward of course. We will wait.

And your King, I hope they are well"

    BandyLegs casts his mind back...

    The Choice, one month ago:

Within a few days the people of Soetrard had presented BandyLegs with four main candidates.

Castius captain of the city guards. though he eschewed politics, it was clear he had organisational capability and a deep knowledge of the city. Though perhaps too gruff for the cabinet room and a tendency toward order above all, though fair.

Estief Adfo, former head of the thieves guild. dishonorable, but without a doubt he had the best head for coin in the city. An unbiased assessment could only conclude his economic plan made the most sense. Elin's old master he held a certain contempt for BandyLegs given what happened on Sanderjarn.

Protellimus DiBodli, a well known hospital builder and helper of the poor. Rich from birth, he had little practical sense, but was divinely blessed and possessed of a great moral heart.

Carrador, the ancient mage within the tree. He had proclaimed himself upon the judge's defeat. Who better to lead and protect the city than one with power near the Judge's and experience of multiple worlds. Though he placed a geasa upon himself to abide by BandyLegs decision. He had cleverly placed fliers in Donny the discount Elf's shop in order to spread the word.

The day came when BandyLegs stood out on a platform at the ruins of the Tower of Soet with his decision. The people waited for his word....

"there could easily be 2 of them.... If they had beaten the judge they'd have come back for me.... Honestly, you murder 1 old woman and suddenly you're a tough guy. He would literally have crushed you! He probably did crush them. And why would they come here? Forget it. We have stuff to do.

Kim, are you going to be ok here? Would a pair of legs help you blend in more? Maybe just stay in the wagon? Keep an eyes out for trouble?

What? A month of eye jokes was too much? Kim?

Ash, I see that look. If that were *our* Ekbard, and Bandylegs were still alive, do you still think it would be called the tower of Ekbard? He'd get a mud hut round the back if he was lucky. Put your knees back together. That's right, I know what it's for now. I read a book. There were pictures."

She shudders involuntarily. So many pictures. She has seen a lot of strange things recently but what god thought *that* was the most efficient set of functions to group together? This universe is sick to it's core.

"Zassanach! You will guide us to the docks so we can find our boat. Then you will help me find the insect fighting pits! And then... I haven't thought that far ahead. Boat!"

    Tower of Ekbard:
A member of the city council approaches Goodie in his archery chamber.

"Master Hobbit...." the Zassani still use the old term "...we have an assassination contract for you. A criminal lord from Osinzir. He is currently holding a party for the local underworld at his Winter Home here. The city would of course pay well, interested?"

The day came when BandyLegs stood out on a platform at the ruins of the Tower of Soet with his decision. The people waited for his word....

Bandylegs paces the tower looking down at all the faces loyal to him.

'Citizens of Soetrard. The time has come fer us to determine a new Ruler. One who will be just, swift and fair to all.

After great deliberation, a decision has been made and the ruler shall be decided this day.

Castius, former head of the royal guard. Step forward. From this day until your last you shall now be the ruler of Soetrard.

I realise the other four men I considered will be disappointed. But these are perilous times. And we CANNOT have any further upheaval as Castius adjusts to his new position of power.

Protellimus shall be proclaimed Master Builder of Soetrard, and will have a seat on the high council of Soetrard.

To Carrador, powerful mage. Magicks are dangerous in these times. But also necessary. Ye have shown yerself to be true, placing a geasa on yerself to abide by me decision. As a result, Castius has deemed fit to name you elder court wizard of Soetrard, and - if ye can hack it - Lord of the UnderDark from this day forth. We need a keen hand to assist us in controlling the danger below, and ye are the man fer the job.

Armed guards now appear on the parapet behind the thief master as Bandylegs turns to him.

To the thief master - put him in chains. He has proved in the past he cannot be trusted, and has shown contempt fer me. The time fer thievin' and lyin' in this city is in the past. His prize, will be death.

Bandylegs steps back and places the crown on Castius' head.

'Rule wisely, Castius. I know I have chosen well.'

"Kim - The deed! No, the one to the ship, stop teasing Ash. And don't forget - none of us have any money, don't break or eat anything! And meet me at the docks! And keep an eye out for squirrels!"

Othegre pockets the deed, eying Zassman suspiciously. It's been over a month and he's still cooperating. Is she really that strong or is he some kind of imbecile? She resolves to study the droning ritual again and top up his loyalty reserves.

    Street to Temple district:
BandyLegs marches at the head of a small elite Soetradian unit, guided by the Zassani council men. The main council man discusses trade agreements once at length on the walk.

"Lord Retributor!" one of the men shout in his direction.

There, in the middle of the street stand Goodie and Ekbard.

"Sir, the one who stole from you..."

The Soetradian men hesitate, for Goodie was also known to have aided against the judge. The Zassani council man whispers to BandyLegs.

"Ekbard is a prophesied hero. The Nerosian elders would raid the city if he is harmed."

Kim's instructions imply the ship is taken care of by a couple from even further south than Osinzir at the small ship docks.

A man in his mid sixties with thinning hair greets Othegre.

"Hey Sheela, Kim tell you we had the ship? Name 's Alf..." he gestures "...and my wife Alisa. A fine vessel, she's a really home away from home."

Bandylegs smirks at the council man.

'Fear not. I have no quarrel with either man.'

He steps forward to meet his two companions.

'Gentlemen. We have all risen in stature I see. Bandylegs wishes no harm upon thee, nor will I be askin' anyone to kneel afore me. I gave up that right when I appointed Castius - if ye be remembering him - as the new King of Soetrard. Come, let us sit in the nearest tavern and tell our tales whilst we drink ale.'

He steps in front of the Halfling master, regarding him warily.

'Any more tricks up yer sleeve to relieve me of any more possessions laddie? I will not fight ye fer the helm, it is yers if ye deem it so. Merely a request to have the item back if ye please. A small request given what has happened.

I fear there will be anger when ye hear of what I had ter do after ye left.'

G'day, mate! I mean ahoy! Yes, Kim asked me to deliver the cargo for him. He was supposed to be here but he got side tracked in the market. You know Kim. A good kick in the pants, he'll be right. Except he can't wear pants....maybe he won't ever be righ- I digress! My name is Othegre! I'd shake your hand but to be honest I don't really fancy cleaning up after. So, how do you know Kim, how did you come to be caretaker of this boat and what can you tell me about the cargo?

"Me and Alisa used to run holidays to here from the sunset penninsula past Osinzir. Our penninsula is a protectorate of their nation, so we're technically Ossies.

As for Kim, well she ran a very successful shipping business from here. Our pier and the one for this boat, which handles her rare shipments, were next to each other for a while. So we minded each other's boats.

I tell ya, mutual guarding of property, that's when good neighbours become good friends.

As for what's on board, it's a collection of ancient artefacts to be delivered to the tower of Mzini at the extreme north of the Nerosian Archipelago."

I know you killed Citra, your deeds travel afore you, mainly because your mouth claims and proclaims them and the deeds of others as you own for all that will listen. I don’t care why you did it only that you were able, truely you are protected by powers I don’t understand.

I don’t know what you mean by “what has happened !” I risked my life to save your people, while you yourself were in no danger and not only do you not thank me but in your proclamations you ignore my deeds lest they make yours seem less special. So I realised you were a Dwarf and I a Hafling and that i should be happy with my people as you were happier among yours.

"That sounds like quite the journey, and clearly Kim is in no hurry. I might hang around a bit, see the sites. Well, good to meet you Alf. So - where is your boat? Because..."

"No treachery, just signalling a hold on the Nerosian"

    He glances around.

    "Our men...."

A man in strange black garb leaps from the roof with a massive ball of lightning in his hands and comes screaming down in BandyLegs's direction....

Four such men land forming a square around Ekbard.

    OOC: Check against spell Ekbard.

Goodie instantly fires an arrow blowing back the one careening toward BandyLegs.

The four attempt to slow Ekbard and grab him, but their grib slips off and he slices two apart instantly.

Another flurry of arrows from Goodie blows the remaining men's bodies to pieces.

The Zassan entourage looks at the men's robes, pulling back the hoods to reveal their shriveled and dried faces.

"The cult of the Mummy" one of the Zassani elder priests says to another in a fearful tone.

"This is the mark of Zha'satep"

    OOC: Off for the night.

Bandylegs searches his attacker for any items of note before turning to the Halfling.

'Let's start a new chapter laddie - beginning now. Thankee fer the help.'

    Bandylegs nods.

'Aye. Keep the helm. Tis the least I can do ter atone fer me arrogance.'

    He turns to Ekbard.

'Good to see yer reflexes havenae changed either. Thankee too. Now laddies, what about that ale?'

"I'm a bit suspicious about your guards Bandylegs, I sent them to fetch us some ale, and they've been gone a bit too long, do you think they could be involved with this attack?"

Ekbard then turns on the Zassani who spoke of holds, grabbing him by the collar and raising him to his tippee toes, "And you, what is this hold you are signalling on me, it happened to co-incide with the attack on me?"

Ekbard is not releasing the man until he gets answers.

Ekky I think that the people comming to ya for instruction were simply keeping tabs on us. And that the archers I was helping were ready to shoot us today. God knows why but I have a plan. Is there an ozirian embassy round here ?

    Bandylegs shakes his head.

'Nay - the guard unit ye sent off are loyal ter me. I personally selected em from Castius' recommendation. He wouldnae turn on me.

I'd be more concerned they may have been attacked ter be honest. They be skilled.... but not like yerself laddie.

We should check on them. Bring the Zassan council member, if they're dead ye can lop off his head.'

'Nay. The spell only brings life back to dwarves, elves, humans or halflings. Mummies not be included. And I dinnae if I could even use it. I'd have ter commune with Vergadain to see is it permitted.'

OOC: Bandylegs presumably can use Raise Dead as it's non destructive? How about Flame Strike on an attacking target?

Bandylegs looks at Goodie and Ekbard.

'If ye really wish me to speak with this being, we should take his body with us. I need ter visit me temple afore I can do so.

And... I dinnae think the natives would take kindly ter me raisin' the dead in streets. So... find me guard unit, to the temple and then whatever ye have planned next?'

He notices Kal who has just returned from the woods.

"So thief, a little changed are we. Your friend here wants more than my little books. Perhaps the big one, but the game will be correspondingly more dangerous."

Goodie remotely views the rooftops and streets 120' about them. There is a man in a green robe lying prone on a roof to their South, pouring some kind of powder into a bag and occasionally glancing at the group.
