    Hi folks,

Would rewiring a protected structure require planning permission? i see that you can apply for a section 57 which appears to allow you to do light refurbishment to a house if not changing anything structurally, im planning on doing some painting, possible laying of laminate flooring and that’s it, im hoping a section 57 will cover that BUT im guessing not so with rewiring? Any input would be greatly appreciated

You could Lodge a Section 5 application to the council.
You basically list out all the works you want to do and they will tell you if Planning is required or not.

Photos would help also in the application.

Thanks a lot for the reply, yes next step onto dcc, can’t wait for the red tape, basically i just want to paint
, bit of laminate flooring in two rooms. I’ve no doubt the rewiring will be a big job so I’m willing to drop that for now

Cant really argue the red tape as surely you knew that when buying a Protected Structure?

Generally if the wiring is following the same routes, and is not making a mess of features, then it is ok.

To be sure, section 57 will probably state all ok. But so much of this can be hit and miss with conservation officers.

Personally I think rewiring/re-plumbing is a key conservation activity as its fire and leaks that mostly destroy period properties. They shouldn't make it more difficult than it needs to be.

This is spot on. Just quoting it to agree.
