Hi, we are thinking of holidaying in Ireland this year. We would love a nice house within walking distance of the beach and maybe pub / restaurant and few shops. Can any of you suggest anywhere? We've done Dingle last year and it was really good but the house was a bit far out from the town. Any suggestions would be great

We went to a place in Sligo last year called Easky. It's tiny with only a couple of pubs, a shop and a school. A proper small Irish village but we can't wait to go back. You can walk down to the beach and it's fantastic. There's a little cafe called Puddin Row in the village which was great and about 20 minutes away is a place called Beach Bar Sligo and it was absolutely fantastic for dinner.

You're not too far from Ballina for a big town and there's plenty of activities close by.

Or down the road from Easky is Enniscrone - a bigger place, but has a bit of everything including nice pubs and good food and a gorgeous safe beach, surfing, fishing, horse-riding, golf, seaweed baths to steam away the aches and pains from all that activity ;) ...... a great all-rounder for family holidays.

Kilkee? Nice beach there, a lovely cliff walk, and the Cliffs of Moher, Ailwee, Burren are not too far away either. Carraigaholt Dolphinwatch if you are into that, there are good places for fishing too if you want to.

Brilliant thanks for all those I'm going check out them all and see what's available. Was never in carlingford, is there a beach near you up there?

Enniscrone also has the pilot bar with one of the best chowders I've ever had and one of the creamiest pints of Guinness I've ever drank.

It all just tastes better out west.

That's exactly where i had in mind when i said good pubs and food! I'm sure there are other great spots but I just never seem to manage to get past The Pilot!

Stayed in Ballygarrett last summer. Loved it. Quiet location with great beaches near by. Easy drive to many other places also. Took a cottage off airbnb, the garden was amazing for the kids to explore.

Dunfanaghy in Donegal is a stunner of a seaside town. Quite similar in scenery to Dingle actually. Lots of lovely cafes and restaurants and ice parlours etc. Look up The Rusty Oven for pizzas, yum. Great beaches and water sports nearby too.

A great base for touring the North West. Hornhead, Glenveagh Castle, Ards Friary on your doorstep.

Fair play to you for seeing so much of Ireland, not many people do.

I love Westport too. Great town and lots to do for children. Westport House is a great spot for young and old.

We went to Westport last year but I'd love to find a town up North to go this year.

If you're into Game of Thrones you could base a trip north around that? I went to visit a friend in Belfast and he took me to a few locations and it was really cool seeing them in real life. Also did giants causeway and the titanic experience in Belfast.

Other than that I've been to Bundoran, it's just a poor man's Vegas. Nothing to see/do apart from play slot machines imo. Killybegs is a lovely little spot, but it's a trek to get to. Still had a great time there.

We really do have a grand little country. I try and get to a few small towns/villages a year

Thanks, yeah we've done a good bit of the country probably why I'm finding it hard to choose somewhere this year. I think its nice for our kids to see their own country before going elsewhere! Its just sooooo expensive, which is what ruins Ireland I think.
Dobman88 I completely agree we do have a fab country and when we have good weather it is just amazing.

Will be looking at holidaying at home ourselves this year but as said the cost is prohibitive. Have seen some crazy prices for a weeks self catering.

Crazy is right, just madness. We did airbnb last year and was good maybe that might be worth a try for you. My husband suggested last night that maybe we should look at getting the ferry to wales and see what way that works out

We may have found something for 350 a week in West Cork in mid July. We are off to Tenby in March for a week in an apartment costing 500 pounds.

Just been informed we're heading for Baltimore in West Cork middle of April. The Saturday activity is whale watching. Sounds interesting and looking forward to it.

    I recommend these http://www.valentiaislandcottages.com

We've stayed a few times in her houses and were impressed. Prices are also fairly reasonable.

Brilliant thanks for all the suggestions. Great to get a good deal somewhere,
July and August are so expensive normally
