    Hi,

Was about start looking at a leaf with 13K to spend. Initially a 24kwh one.

I have a 80km round trip with only home charging. Navan to Blanch. Using M3 but mainly N3. Easy access at house for a wall charger too.

but reading here, I think I'll wait til mid-spring or summer and extend to e15/16k and get a 30kwh - 6.6kw leaf instead.

Just to work out savings (petrol, tax & vrt), with a night meter installed, what approx charging electricity cost will I have a week/month. Working mon-friday so approx 500km/week.

    Thanks

    K

500km a week is 25k km per year. That's a lot. Our Leaf does 10k km a year at around €100 per year in fuel (night rate). So you're looking at €250 per year in fuel.

    Motor tax is €120.

    So for 500km:

Leaf does around 16.5kWh/100km in the real world (advertised as 15kWh/100km NEDC). Good rates for nightsaver power are about 7-8 cents per kWh incl. VAT.

    5 x 16.5 x 0.07 = €5.60
Add about 10% for charging losses, so you'll be out ~€6/week.

That can easily be wiped out by moving the washing machine and dishwasher to the night rate.

Depends how fast you go to be honest. A standard 24kw Leaf will do the journey but at restricted speed. It will drive you nuts in longer term

I would suggest trying to hold out and get the larger battery. For 2 reasons
    1. You can floor it in during the summer months to a massive 110-120km
    2. During the winter months you can use the air con to heat your cold ass up :-)

I guess you go on and off the M3 to miss the toll. Hopefully the government will finally get ass in gear and announce the reduced tolls which of course would help. If going down to Dunshauglin and then coming back onto M3 you are adding a good few k to journey.

    Thanks
I work earlies & lates, so only use the M3 5 days out of 10 to work, and N3 on the return home. N3 in and out on lates.

I bought my 2nd hand petrol octavia in late 2011 - so 6 years of motoring at approx 20k km/year
so I have spent on fuel & tax (service it myself) - a total of €18600.

If I can save even e15K over 6 years with a leaf - that'll be my next cars purchase price.

    Thanks

    K.

Yep do big miles on your commute and you'll save a fortune in an EV. It is also likely that the difference in running costs between an EV and an ICE is going to grow over the next few years. You will also qualify for the €600 grant for your home charger install, karltimber, which should more or less cover the cost of a 32A charger incl. installation

I have the same commute... except I'm 15km north of navan town.
I do it in a 24kWh leaf... and for 6+ months did it with no work charging and just a granny cable at home.

If you are in Navan town centre you will make navan-blanch-navan easily on one charge in a 24kWH. Possibly on 80% charge even.

Get the 6.6kW. It will cost you not much more on a second hand model but so handy to have.

Get work charging installed if at all possible - removes any remaining range anxiety

The 24kWh is a great car if you are keeping it long term Make sure you get a gen1.5 (141 onwards) and you won't see much battery deg. I lost 8% over the first 100k km for instance and that was not babying it at all, doing 500-700km trips with 9-10 fast charges etc

If however you plan on selling in 2-4 years get the 30kWh as it will be more resaleable.

Navan town to blanch to navan town is not even 80km.
A 24kWh leaf will have no problem doing that a t all. I know as 1year+ experience of doing the same commute with 15km more each way!

    Hi

I will get the 30kwh 6.6 leaf to future proof myself plus my mams house is in city centre.

If the savings I will make are real, then the extra few euro I will spend now will be worth it long term. Plus the extra savings will contribute to my next ev.

Great the grant will cover the charger install.

You might have to shop around a bit. I'm expecting prices to start inflating. They always do when there is a hefty subsidy involved.

This is standard practise, cost to install charger today could be 600....grant issued for 600, cost to install charger tomorrow is 1200....

Am I right in saying you have to have an ev car first?

Haven't looked at application form yet.

You do. But I'd start shopping around now, for both a home CP and an electrician to wire it in. There are huge variations in price.

Navan town centre to blanch and back would be doable at 120.
My commute was generally done at 100, 95 in the winter, but remember I had 15 km more each way before I got work charging.

Navan is also well specced with chargers - there's 3 SCP and a reliable FCP

So what I said was correct?

    NO...
Navan to blanch and back would be doable at the max speed allowed on the road. That is not restricted. The OP was talking about Navan, not 15km north which is where I was.

    You do.

Had a look at application form.

You dont need a car initially.
Apply so they can check you haven't got a grant before. They then give you the ok.

You then have 6 mths to get a charger and a car.
When you prove both, they give you the €600.

    Good way to do it.

Where did I say his speed was restricted?
You misappropriated what I said and then resort to a meme?

For once the government has come up with a decent application route. At least you know before investing in car if you will get the 600 quid....

Get in forms and then happy car hunting :p

30kwh is the better option if you could stretch to it.
    6.6kw charger - a must.
The one time you may use it to get you out of the hole will pay off the expense...

    As for the grant...
Once they clear your MPRN is OK to get a charger (you can not have 2 chargers given for one MPRN), you get the form, get a RECI electrician to sign the form that the install is according the refs, you take a pic of you car attached to the charging point while charging and send back the completed form.
    Then the money comes...

Slightly off topic but how bad is the low/high SOC caused by these long commutes on the battery?

My commute is a 170km round trip and next car will hopefully be an EV.

Waiting for work to get charge points sorted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,186 ✭✭✭✭KCross

Also note on the grant that you have to have a driveway before they will signoff on it.

It appears they won't give the grant even if you manage to get a charge point installed (e.g. Apartments with underground car parks, on-street parking etc).

They seem to be sticking to the off-street driveway requirement for this grant.

I have a driveway, plus easy access to where it will be positioned. And a priority switch installed from an uninstalled 2nd shower.

I have a few questions on chargers and cables but I'll start a new thread for that.

    Research Feb
    Apply grant March
Install night rate & charge point April
    Ev purchase may/June

    :)

Just be aware that the existing wiring setup in the house may cause issues here, depending on the age of the house:
I had no Neutralising cable which meant I would have to get a RECI in to survey the whole house: they wanted to insist on getting house up to existing standards, as opposed to just adding in the neutralising cable: estimate was 5k so I now have a nice ornament on the wall :(

Thanks - house extended 8 years ago and nearly full electrics done at the time.
great points though - for me and others reading these threads.
