Water Softener problem

    Hey :)

So I very recently had a water softener system installed. All water in the home is soft with the exception of the outside tap.

The day I had it installed, I descayled my electric kettle. But within a few days, it had completely scaled up again. So I figured maybe it was the last bit of hard water that was in the pipes.

I contacted the softener company and told them about the kettle scaling. I brought water in to be tested. Hot tap, cold tap and the drinking water tap. The hot tap tested a little bit of lime because the hot water tank is still limey and it should clear up within a month.

But the cold tap and drinking water tap tested perfect for soft water. I only use the water from the drinking tap to fill the kettle. So I descayled it again 2 days ago but when I looked this morning, the bottom of the kettle was covered in lime.

Has anyone any ideas why this is happening? Advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

    Thank you!

Sounds like the softener may have ran out of salt or needs to regenerated. Is it working off a timer (regenerates x times a week) or on a volume of water (regenerates after a certain no of litres/m3.

    Hi Shane,

I literally just had it installed 2 weeks ago. It is not out of salt (I just checked). It regenerates as and when it needs to, so, on volume. I suspected that maybe it is still clearing out lime in the pipes? But i'm not sure of this because new pipes have gone in. I brought a sample of the water from the kettle after it cooled down into the company where I purchased it and they tested it. It tested perfectly soft despite all the white bits floating around in it.

I have no clue what to do... maybe give it a few weeks and see does it clear?

Would you not be best to get the installer back to check it?

Of course that’s what I will do if I need to. I thought this is a good way to find out if it’s something that’s normal for a couple of weeks before I make myself look stupid. That’s probably what I’m doing now anyways. Thanks
