Just wondering opinions or what would you go for if you had 10k Stg to go to uk and buy either of the above.

Have to look at the following

    Maintance
    Driveability
Running costs. Excluding tax and insurance and petrol.

Love to here from the rare few that would have owned both.

Also value appriciacation could be a factor.

you would be struggling to find either of those cars below £10k, a quick look on pistonheads show 0 8 series under that, and 1 e39 m5, so it could be a choice of 1:)
Some of the e39 are over £20k!

    Maybe that boat has sailed.

I love the look of the 8 series.. but that m5 engine...

I think 8 series prices will go even higher after they release the new one

There is value in e36 M3 still. I'd go down that route.

    What's your definition of value?

I have to say I don't think this is for you.
Your budget is rock bottom for either of these and your post says you have to consider running costs too.

For what it's worth e39 m5 all day long between those 2 cars. I drove both, briefly. The m5 was just a brilliant experience, the 840i was a big cruiser of a GT car, quite soft.

I'd love an e39 m5 but only when time is right that it won't ruin me.

Still can be found for under 10k yet are rising in value. Also approaching classic status so near enough to classix tax. Old enough for classic insurance.

E39 M5 is the Don but £10k will get you a rough early car.

Expect more interest in the 8 though when the new one is released.
