283 days today sim Capone heifer - can't handle it but I'm hoping its fluid and it will go away after calving as I had that before with a heifer.

She healthy as can be .. Should I be worried ?

Normal. Happens a heifer when she's springing.

Ya its just flagging as its called. Wouldnt worry

Heifers here had flagging last year, my vet said that i gave them too much pre calver mineral and the salt in the mineral caused it.
It left them a bit sore after they calved and a couple of them wouldnt let their calves suck so it was into the crush with them to tie their leg back.

Nice heifer, what is she in calf to?

What are we talking about here, swelling in the udder or the belly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭tanko

Oh yeah, i see the swelling under her bellly now. Never seen anything like that before.

Could be a hernia that's opened with pressure from the calf as she's so far gone. But have also seen one of ours do the same (milky sh breeding) that flagged up right under her belly as well.
I'd wait until she calves and see if it subsides, though I'd like to handle it and see if it's squishy like a hernia and can be pushed back upwards into the belly, you might be able to feel the edges of the hole too. If it was I'd be hesitant to put her incalf again.

Had one like it tbis year for first time. Id put money on it that itll disappear over a few weeks after she calves

Never heard it called a purse before.
But it's always called a good sign of milk here.

It's no wonder the suckler people here have no clue about it. Ha! :D;)

Belly , right little bucket sized sump on her!! Hope it isn't a hernia as lady hay wire also mentioned as I had that in a weanling one time

Nothing to worry about. Often saw it on black limousin x friesian heifers.

She no giant but not small either, it's kinda mucked around the ring feeder there!

She was outwintered as a weanling on meal / silage, full sister was housed and yes I'd agree with you full sister is a better heifer !

I thought that alright but yeah the full sister is special and both quiet and from a great big hR x Lm cow , KEZ in her and she due again be too much to ask for 3 sim heifers in a row me thinks !!

Calved yesterday am, zag bull unassisted 290 days.. Just fluid as all gone beneath her!

Simmentals have good docility , she stood up there and let me milk/feed the 4 teats into calves mouth, never housed or handled in Any way before bar dosing !
