I am hoping to by a car in Northern Ireland tomorrow. I was hoping to keep it off the road for a few months before driving it. How long do I have after buying it to pay VRT? Do I have to go to NCT centre within seven days and pay VRT within thirty days?

It needs to be booked in for a VRT inspection within 7 days of entering the state, it needs to be fully registered and on Irish plates within 30 days of it entering the state.

The 30 days does not begin after the VRT inspection.

    Are you buying privately?

All this information is on the NCT website: https://www.ncts.ie/1155

You have 7 days from bringing the car into the country to book a VRT inspection appointment.

You have 30 days from bringing the car into the country to have a VRT inspection, pay the VRT and complete the registration over to Irish plates. Once you get the new Irish registration number you need to wait 24 hours before you can tax the car online. Note that you will not receive the new logbook until the car is taxed for the first time.

If the car is 4 years or older then after you register the car in Ireland you need to book a NCT separately.

In addition, and bazz will confirm this, the PIN for reg'ing import for first time (road tax online) down here will be the last 6 digits of the chassis no on the book (I think).

VRT inspection and NCT test are seperate. VRT inspection and payment can be done together as long as they don't have to request a stat code from Revenue but I don't think you can do the NCT on the same day as the car and new Irish reg takes at least a day or two to appear on the system.
