Questions on Beef Linear Scoring & Functionality

    I thought I'd ask here before e-mailing ICBF so here goes;

    Anyone know know how the value for Functionality is calculated? What traits are included and what weight are given to each.
    ZAG, for example is 73% Rank Within Breed. I think Locomotion and the Leg assessment scores are included, but are the Width of the muzzle and all that included?

    Also are the scores for Muscle absolute values, as in cm's or are they related in some way to the skeletal values.

    Did you try googling linear scoring?
    I see some stuff on charolais.ie about it.

    It's very specialist. I doubt the scorers want you to know the trade secrets! I'd be surprised if you get any soot from emailing

    I've seen most of that stuff, but you'd think ICBF would explain how they come about that figure. I see that bulls with good locomotion figures have a good functionality figure too, so locomotion must be heavily weighted.

    Might stalk them all the same. ;)

    What else is there in functionality other than being able to move around freely and bull cows which is locomotion. It doesnt really affect much in the grand scheme of things imo

    Ah the shape of the legs is important too. Too extreme of anything is bad, so it's good to know when crossing with your own cows.

    Does scrotal size come under functionality?

    Does scrotal size come under functionality?

    Its mass is taken into account along with the angle of the dangle and square of the hair.
    Functionality = Mass Of Scrotal area X angle of dangle/square of the hair

    Is that using a standard scale or a Log scale?

    Is that using a standard scale or a Log scale?

    Standard scale, it is effected also by the Log of the volume of D. D is usually not present so the formula is usually given without D. The actual full formula if D is a factor is

    Functionality = Mass Of Scrotal area X angle of dangle/square of the hair/Log D
