I can't believe I'm looking for help in changing a bulb! So, one end opens up a little, there's a tight Spring inside. We have no clue how to get the frosted glass part off or out to see what type of bulb there is and to change it. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Looks like a fluorescent light, can you open it up at all, that face piece is just a cover.

The frosted piece is set into the frame. The frame slightly opens up st the end away from the smoke alarm but it doesn't open enough to slide the glass out. Seems like an engineering problem!

It's most likely an LED sealed unit going by how shallow it is. There will be no bulb in it and the only thing you can do it replace the whole thing.
Does it work at all? You may need to access the attic to check out if there an LED driver attached to it.

Are LED lights not reasonably recent? This installation looks a bit more dated. Would there be one of those circular fluorescent bulbs in the housing?

It does open somewhat at one end, two thick tight springs holding the flap closed. Above that light is a bedroom. Thanks though!

The house was only built 9 years ago so it cannot be any older than that. I've taken the photo to a light fitting shop and they've never seen one like it! Would love to get it fixed as it is a great light from it.

I'd say it opens from the opposite side to the one the springs are on. Have you tried that?

Yes, we've tried that. It only opens at one end the rest of the casing is rigid and does not move at all. So fecking annoying and seems like I'm just missing something simple! Thanks though.

The side the spring is on may be what releases it and then push and pull the opposite side.

Can you see any screws or a place for a flat head screw driver to pop it.

Did the light come out at the sides or the bottom?

The smoke alarm may well be in the way too.

Usually with those types as I said it's pull down tilt and slide to unlock.

They don’t look that unusual, but you’ll need to poke around to see how it comes off, possibly at the spring loaded end you can reach in and slide springs off if they are clipped to the recessed part, that would be standard enough and it will open 90degrees. If it pops open that end and can see springs that would be me guess, maybe squeeze the camera end of a phone in gap and take a video to try to visualise it.
