Just heard via post that Avantcard (Ex MBNA) are no longer supporting VISA and that new cards will be issued ASAP in the MASTERCARD format.

ANY negatives to this at all? Apart from it being a PITA to have to update all those online shops that hold card details on your account.

Is MASTERCARD as widely taken as VISA, worldwide? Would have preferred to stay with VISA, don't know why but always figured MASTERCARD weren't as well known as VISA.

In Europe you should not see a difference, the acceptance is usually the same, same for the US.

Mastercard claims to be accepted in more countries than Visa but so far it is not clear to me which countries they are better.

You should not really see any difference.

Yes, it's a hassle to change re-occurring payments to a new number.

Also, it will require that payments reflect the new account number as not only the card number changes according to the FAQ but also the account number. So make sure your payment (if you don't pay by direct debit) reflects the new account number you will see online.

There is quite some competition going on between Visa and Mastercard in light of the EU restrictions on what they can earn, so it's not surprising if a bank picks that which offers the best cost and also integrates best into their platform.

    There is an online FAQ:
