Simple as the title says, some are overly simple, some are overly complicated. Which one do you use?

VLC is handy for cutting segments out

Try davinci resolve lite. Will take a bit of learning but you can blur plates as well as edit

I don't see a lite version on their website - maybe I'm looking at the wrong place?

Looks like they have gone from lite and normal to normal and 'studio', so just go for the one on the left and that one is free!

it's a bit finicky to use but there are lots of tutorials on youtube and if anyone gets stuck I could try help

This is one of the examples that I would categorise as "overly complicated" tbh :)

I've tried it and the first time I was kind of getting around. Second time I decided laid my hands on it, it decided to freeze on the splash screen. Uninstalled, reinstalled, same story. Uninstalled, deleted all data from registry etc, reinstalled, same story..

I use shotcut on my linux machine, there's Windows versions too:

    https://www.shotcut.org/download/

Quite simple to use and it works well. You can't do anything too fancy with it, but for cutting and merging different videos together it's a breeze. Worth a go I reckon.

try on a different computer if you want to bother with it but no point wrestling with it if it is crashing on you

You could get Avid Media Composer First which has a steep learning curve but it's also free

As said above VLC can cut clips to length, and you can merge clips together in VLC too

+1 so many tutorials available on youtube.

I've been using shotcut for a while now but lately it's freezing on me and not displaying the imported videos so impossible to edit.

Movie Maker is the best simple editor I've used. I don't know why MS keep trying to take it away.

Although I've only done a couple of videos, I thought Filmora was great. I don't know where I came across it but it's pretty easy to use for somebody with very little clue of video editing and it has some nice effects, transitions, etc.

Movie Maker for single/simple clips in Win10, I think I had to install it separately, wasn't included in the OS.
Wondershare Filmora for zooming in on the action (wife bought it for her work)

Have looked at Hitfilm4 Express? It's free to download and use. It's not complicated to use if your used to Sony Vega or YouTube creator this will be a walk in the park for you. Plenty of 'how to use' videos on YouTube about it too. I use it for all my YouTube videos DashCam or not. You can purchase add ons if you want to but it's optional.

    So, a recap:
    • Davinci Resolve - freezing on the splash screen
    • Shotcut - interface didn't work out for me but the portable installation option is notable
    • VLC - too basic for what I had in mind
    • Movie Maker - too basic for what I had in mind
    • Avid Media Composer First - huge installation with trash starting on boot
    • Filmora - amazing, simple, and snappy and I was determined to keep it until I realised it's not free :pac:
    • Hitfilm Express - free, less snappy than Filmora, but works. And I'm keeping it. At least for now.
    • Adobe Premiere - planning to try this too

So, example compilation made with Hitfilm:

Seems to work well, I watched the video in full, the Nextbase dashcam is a good quality camera. With HitFilm it's easy to use and they don't push you to buy add ons, had to laugh though in your video, there's a bit at the back of Airside where a LandRover is broken down, I was right behind you then, that clip will be in my next video

I dont use one for the dashcam unless im merging video as the xiaomi app cuts the video to size before i take mine off the camera

But when i do its +1 Shotcut is quite easy to use and loads of tutorials on YouTube

Windows 10 has a basic video editor built into the photos app I think it replaces movie maker.
