    Hi

We have a hot water tank that is taking up quite a bit of room in one of the bedrooms

We considered ancombi boiler to remove it, but would prefer to get panels. Can we move the tank to the attic when it's replaced with panels?

The existing tank is not that old and is factory insulated

We're south east facing, family of 6, how much to purchase and install would you know?

There's a good sticky thread on the pay back period you are likely to expect on solar panels. As an investment it doesn't seem to make any sense right now.

Even if payback period were 5-10 years, you'd be better off paying the money to energy supplier instead during that period. In 5-10yr when the technology has matured, prices have fallen for equipment, and it's more obvious what return you'll get on your investment considering purchasing.

Also the fact that you can't get paid for sending energy back to the grid and the cost of storing energy on site is too expensive at the moment makes solar panels a bad investment right now.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Solar hot water (panels or the more efficient tubes) attracts a large subsidy, which greatly helps with payback period. But unless you use a lot of hot water, payback time is not great (but still better than anything else solar like solar PV). That said, we're a family of 5 (4 women), we use lots of hot water and we find our Kingspan 40 tube system great.

A combi boiler and water tank plus solar tubes is not the best combination !!
My boiler had to be reset on system boiler.
Cant remember now but it had to be done.
So,not sure if that can be as you wanted, you will need to check with a plumber first.

For a family of 6 i will say easy 400l tank and at least 40 good positioned tubes.

Few days ago,my solar tubes raised the temperature in the 300L cylinder to almost 50 degrees.
PV panels generated around 5KWh that same day.

If i will had the cash,i will go with both systems.
But,as unkel said, solar tubes has a good refund of the SEAI grant.
