Postgrad teaching and Back to Education Allowance

    Hello all,

I am currently applying to do the PME (Secondary School teaching qualification). It is a postgraduate course. I can qualify for Back to Education Allowance if I have been receiving a social welfare payment for 12 months directly before I start. If I stay on social welfare between now and September, I will qualify for the BTEA payment.

The dilemma is, I need to find work ASAP so I can save to pay the college fees. If I get a full time job, however, I will not qualify for the BTEA anymore.

The alternative is working part time where I can receive part Jobseekers to supplement my wages which would work out fine. I could work 1-3 days in a week and be eligible for the social welfare payment, thus qualifying me for the BTEA payment come September.

I have a really good chance of getting a part time job which is 20 hours per week but over 5 days. I don't really want to lie to the social welfare but would it be OK to tell them the 20 hours is for 3 days work? I feel this is my only option, unless I can find another job 1-3 days a week.

I just don't understand why I cannot work full time now and then get the BTEA in September. Taking me off the Dole now would save the state €193 per week, plus I would be paying tax in my job. Instead I am left in a dilemma where I am thinking about lying just so I can get to the course I want to do.

    Any help is appreciated.
