Hi, I just did 7 hours of temporary work that is a once off. I've only ever worked abroad so I'm completely clueless as to what I need to do about tax for this. I'm Irish but I've never worked in Ireland only abroad. Could someone tell me what I need to do. I don't have a p45 or anything as I've never worked here before. I'm just very clueless as to how the whole tax system works so all answers are appreciated.

    Hello,

If this is your first employment ever in Ireland you will first need to register for tax. You can do this online by registering for MyAccount on the Revenue website. Once you submit your registration, you will be issued with a password by post.

When you receive this password, log in to MyAccount again. There will then be an option to "Add job or pension". You will need to select add job and follow the steps to register your employment. You will need the employers tax reg number (seven digits with a letter or two) in order to complete this . Once completed your tax credits will be allocated to your employer until they submit a P45 for your temporary work.

Do you know if I need to do anything after this? This job was literally just a one off for 7 hours and I wont be doing it again. Or is this all I need to do? Thanks for your help I really don't understand this kind of stuff.

That should be everything. Just ensure that the employer provides you a P45 and that you check with Revenue that they have received a copy of it.

They wont be able to check this until you first register yourself and your job with them.

So it's a once-off and presumably you haven't got your employer's Tax number? Also, presumably, your employer couldn't have got your PPSN, so they won't have registered you as an employee or paid PRSI for you.

You're not going to be liable for PAYE unless you earned a massive sum for that one day's work. So you've lost out on 1 day's PRSI credit.

It's hardly worth worrying about - and I don't know whether Revenue would even issue you with a tax credit cert if you're not in regular employment.

Personally, I'd leave it alone until you find regular employment. In the meantime, why not (i) register for revenue's My Account as others have advised and (ii) maybe familiarise yourself with this:

    Hi OP

It really depends on the nature of the work you were doing. If you received a payslip, then it will show if tax/USC/PRSI were deducted on the pay. If that's the case, you should register the job with Revenue on MyAccount. If this is going to be your only employment in Ireland for the year then you will probably be entitled to get the tax paid on it refunded to you in 2019.

Not-so-strictly-speaking, there is no real need for you to register this job with Revenue - the main reason being that it is extremely unlikely that the employer has done so on their part. If you were only working there for a day, I would assume they probably didn't deduct tax on what they paid you, and just paid you the gross amount.

If that is so, then you don't have to do anything right now. Next year you can fill out a Form 12 and declare the income then and there. It obviously depends on how much you actually made, but it's very unlikely you would actually owe tax on this income on review, unless you were paid an outrageous amount of money for seven hours work.

    Short answer:
If you paid tax on it, get a P45 and register the job with Revenue.
If you did not pay tax on it, declare it on a Form 12 next year.

As the poster above said, I wouldn't be worrying about this income at all unless you are going to be taking up employment in Ireland later this year.
